About this video

Transitioning to a lapel triangle when an opponent defends against a choke:

  1. Start by attempting the initial choke, pulling out the opponent's lapel and passing it over their shoulder to your hand.
  2. If the choke isn't tight enough and the opponent begins to slip their hand to defend, prepare to counter by bringing your other hand underneath.
  3. As the opponent slips their head out, your hand that's underneath grabs their neck, similar to setting up an arm triangle from the back.
  4. Pull the lapel towards the back and feed it to the hand that was waiting underneath.
  5. Begin to fall back, escape your leg, and adjust your hips accordingly.
  6. Place your other hand on your forearm to block and pull, squeezing to secure the submission.
  7. If the opponent is resilient, you can throw your leg over their body to add pressure, pull, and sit through to finish the submission.

Remember to feed the lapel underneath the opponent's arms, not over, for this technique to work effectively. Also, ensure to escape your hip and adjust your position to prevent the opponent's head from slipping out during the submission.
