De La Riva pass counter when the opponent grips the pants:
- Recognize the difficulty of passing when the opponent grips the pants, limiting movement and traditional guard pass options.
- Instead of using the hands to break the grip, employ the 'Najmi Stomp' using the back leg to break the opponent's grip on the pants.
- Begin by popping the De La Riva hook and setting up grips for the pass, noting the pant grip.
- Take a side step towards the gripping hand and push the grip towards the mat to lower it.
- Look towards the wall to maintain balance and step on the opponent's shin, above the ankle, with the back leg to break the grip.
- As the grip breaks, extend the leg fully out, and simultaneously punch the mat with the opposite hand while reaching for the opponent's collar with the other hand.
- Jump or walk to the opposite side of the opponent as they turn up into a turtle position.
- Release the collar grip, allowing the opponent to turn up completely, and transition to the same side control position as before.
- As the opponent turtles, insert the left knee to the side and the right leg on top, maintaining the grip.
- Kick to get the shin hook, adjust the back, and take the opponent's back transitioning into the truck position previously learned.
This technique provides a seamless transition from breaking the pant grip to taking the opponent's back, utilizing balance, grip control, and precise leg work.
