About this video
Unorthodox back take from side control involves a series of movements to secure the opponent's top leg and transition to the back:
- Start in side control after passing the guard, aiming for a smash pass position.
- Scoop the opponent's top leg up with your left knee while walking towards their head.
- Adjust your position by using your other hand on the opponent's back, similar to a smash pass.
- Pull the opponent's elbow up and bring your right knee next to their body.
- Turn your body completely towards the opponent's legs and prepare to roll.
- Avoid rolling towards the opponent's head; instead, roll towards their feet with a side roll.
- Use your right arm to guide the roll, looking towards the opponent's legs and kicking your legs to complete the roll.
- Once in position, you have two options: either transition to the truck position or directly insert your hook to take the back.
- For the truck, kick your leg, place your foot on the opponent's shin, bring your other foot inside, hook their shin, adjust, and take the back.
- Alternatively, insert your hook, pull the opponent up, and secure the back position.
- Ensure you have cleared the opponent's other hook to avoid getting stuck during the roll.
Executing this roll effectively requires timing and control, particularly when pulling the elbow up and crashing your knee in to initiate the roll towards the back.
