About this video
Executing a back take when the opponent defends against the traditional side roll:
- Start with the seatbelt grip and the wrist control, attempting the traditional back take.
- If the opponent turtles and prevents the back take by closing their elbow and rolling to the opposite side, follow their movement.
- As you follow over the top of their body, drive your right knee into the pocket created by their tucked elbow.
- Roll the opponent while pinching your knees together to prevent them from escaping, and secure the back position.
- It's important to use momentum and feel for this technique, rather than force.
- If the opponent starts to roll you over, place your knee in the middle, use your forehead as a post on the mat, and roll with them.
- As you complete the roll, establish both hooks to secure the back control.
Remember to use your head as a post to protect your neck during the roll, as your hands will be occupied maintaining grips.
