Kjetil Lydvo

Kjetil Lydvo was born in January 1995 in Voss, a small village on Norway's West Coast, where the mountainous terrain shaped his athletic identity from an early age. Growing up surrounded by rugged peaks, Lydvo gravitated toward uphill mountain running as a teenager — a discipline that built the aerobic endurance and mental toughness he would later channel into combat sports.

His martial arts journey began at age 10 with boxing, a discipline he pursued steadily through adolescence and competed in at the local level into his late teens. His introduction to jiu-jitsu came at 17, when a new martial arts gym opened in Voss. His initial reaction was skepticism — the sight of kimono-clad practitioners did little to stir interest in a committed boxer. The turning point came during the autumn school holidays, when his boxing academy closed for the break and Lydvo visited the BJJ gym out of convenience rather than conviction. That trial period proved transformative. Stepping onto the mats for the first time, he was immediately captivated by the depth and problem-solving nature of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Shortly after, he left boxing behind entirely to pursue BJJ full time.

Lydvo's development as a jiu-jitsu practitioner was shaped from the outset by the Frontline Academy network. His first coach was Andre Fievel, head instructor of a Frontline satellite gym in Bergen, who made the trip to Voss several times per week to lead training sessions. When Fievel was unavailable, Jason Shields — the founder of the Voss gym — stepped in to run classes, ensuring Lydvo and his training partners maintained consistent, high-quality instruction throughout their formative years. It was under this dual-coaching arrangement that Lydvo earned his blue belt.

Following his blue belt promotion, Lydvo relocated to Oslo to train at the Frontline Academy headquarters — a move that marked a decisive step up in his daily training environment. There, he came under the direct guidance of Eduardo Rios, known within the team as "Teta" and the head of Frontline. Teta would oversee every subsequent belt promotion in Lydvo's career, awarding him his purple belt, brown belt, and ultimately his black belt. The black belt ceremony took place on January 6, 2023.

Lydvo built one of the most consistent competitive records of any Norwegian grappler of his generation, establishing himself as a recurring presence at the top of the podium across multiple belt levels and years.

Blue and Purple Belt Breakthrough

Lydvo's early competitive footprint appeared at the 2016 IBJJF European Open, where he claimed a bronze medal at blue belt. The following year brought a breakout performance: at the 2017 IBJJF European Open, he earned both a gold and a silver medal in the blue belt division — a result that signaled his potential as a high-level competitor. Progressing to purple belt, he sustained that momentum at the European Open with back-to-back gold medals at the 2019 IBJJF European Open and the 2020 IBJJF European Open. He also demonstrated his ability to perform on the global stage, placing 3rd at the IBJJF World Championship in 2019 at purple belt.

Brown Belt Peak and World Title

At brown belt, Lydvo's competitive output reached its highest point. He opened the year with gold at the 2022 IBJJF European Open and added a 3rd place finish at the AJP Grand Slam in London later that year. The defining achievement of his pre-black belt career came at the 2022 IBJJF World Championship, where Lydvo claimed gold in the brown belt division — the most prestigious title available to him at that stage of his journey. Weeks after that world title, Teta Rios presented him with his black belt.

Black Belt Debut

Lydvo's black belt debut on the international stage came at the 2023 IBJJF European Open, where he reached the final and finished with a silver medal — a strong first showing at the sport's highest level. He competes in the Pesadíssimo division, for athletes over 100.50 kg (222.0 lbs).
