Leo Saggioro

Leonardo Saggioro was born on March 7, 1989, in Juiz de Fora, a city in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, situated approximately 40 kilometers from the border with Rio de Janeiro. While Minas Gerais carries a shorter jiu-jitsu tradition than its coastal neighbor, the state built a thriving competitive scene anchored by the work of coach Ricardo Marques, one of the most respected figures in the region's grappling community.

Under Marques' guidance, Saggioro first stepped onto the mats at the age of 13, beginning what would become a lifelong commitment to the art. Showing an early aptitude for competition, he began testing himself against opponents from both Minas Gerais and the neighboring state of Rio de Janeiro, steadily building a reputation that extended well beyond his hometown. His willingness to compete across state lines at a young age accelerated his technical development and laid the foundation for the international career that would follow.

Saggioro's ascent through the colored belt divisions was defined by consistent competitive engagement and a relentless drive to perform on the biggest available stages. That drive announced itself on the international scene in 2008 — shortly after his 18th birthday — when he claimed the IBJJF World Championship title as a purple belt, signaling his arrival as one of Brazil's most promising young competitors.

The momentum carried into the brown belt division, where Saggioro continued to perform at a high level, earning a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World Championship in 2010. Later that same year, his longtime instructor Ricardo Marques awarded him the black belt — a promotion reflecting both technical mastery and proven competitive credibility. The transition to the black belt ranks produced immediate results: a silver medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals shortly after his promotion confirmed that his pedigree would translate seamlessly to the sport's most demanding division.

Establishing Dominance on the Brazilian Circuit

At the black belt level, Saggioro established himself as a durable and versatile competitor in the Peso Pena (featherweight) division, competing at 70 kg / 154.5 lbs under the banner of Brazilian Top Team (BTT). His early black belt years were marked by decisive results on the Brazilian national circuit — back-to-back gold medals at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2012 and 2013 cemented his status among the country's elite at his weight class. A runner-up finish at the CBJJ South American Championship in 2011, alongside a silver at the Brazilian Nationals that same year, further illustrated the pace of his rise in the division.

Global Contention and Cross-Organization Success

On the global stage, Saggioro proved equally formidable. A bronze medal at the 2012 IBJJF World Championship marked his arrival among the world's best, and sustained contention at the sport's premier event followed — culminating in silver medals at both the 2017 IBJJF World Championship and the 2018 IBJJF World Championship, results that placed him among the division's elite over a prolonged period.

His competitive reach extended beyond the IBJJF calendar as well. In 2014, he captured gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro, and in 2018 he topped the field at the UAEJJF King of Mats — performances that demonstrated his ability to execute at the highest level across multiple organizations and rulesets. A third-place finish at the 2024 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship underscored his continued relevance at the elite level well into his mid-30s, a testament to sustained technical refinement and an undiminished competitive drive.

In 2015, Saggioro's career entered a new chapter when he accepted an invitation to relocate to Canada for a full-time coaching position at a Brazilian Top Team (BTT) affiliate school. His arrival in Canada produced an immediate competitive impact on local and regional circuits. Saggioro claimed gold at the IBJJF Montreal Open in 2015 and followed that with back-to-back victories at the IBJJF Toronto Open in 2015 and 2016, establishing himself as the standard-bearer in his division on Canadian soil. These results reflected not only his individual quality but also his ability to maintain peak competitive form while shouldering the full demands of a head coaching role.
