Gabriel de Oliveira

Gabriel "Biel" Oliveira was born on September 3, 1998, in São Paulo, Brazil, into a family already deeply rooted in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His introduction to the sport came at the remarkably young age of three, shaped by the collective influence of family members who were all active practitioners. That early immersion took place at Power Lotus Team, the São Paulo-based academy owned and operated by his uncle, Rodrigo Cândido, an affiliate of the well-established Lotus Jiu-Jitsu.

Oliveira began competing at age five, steadily building experience on the local São Paulo tournament circuit. Despite accumulating results in regional competition, it was the 2014 IBJJF World Championship that fundamentally redirected his ambitions. Claiming a juvenile title at that event, Oliveira experienced a shift in perspective — the realization that jiu-jitsu could serve as the foundation for a sustainable and fulfilling life transformed his relationship with the sport, marking the beginning of a far more deliberate competitive pursuit.

Throughout his development, Gabriel Oliveira remained rooted at Power Lotus Team under the guidance of Rodrigo Cândido, representing Lotus Jiu-Jitsu / Power Lotus across both Brazilian and American competition circuits. His methodical progression through the ranks reflected years of disciplined training and tournament experience.

By 2018, competing at purple belt, Oliveira had established himself as a serious contender on the IBJJF circuit, earning runner-up finishes at both the IBJJF American Nationals and the IBJJF American Nationals NOGI. His momentum carried into the brown belt division, where in 2019 he reached the podium at the IBJJF São Paulo Open and secured a third-place finish at the IBJJF Pan Championship — results that signaled a competitor steadily closing the gap on the sport's elite.

In 2020, amid the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rodrigo Cândido promoted his nephew and longtime student to the rank of black belt, formalizing a coaching relationship built over nearly two decades on the mats.

The trajectory of Gabriel Oliveira's career shifted significantly through a chance encounter with American grappler Sean Dowie, who visited Rodrigo Cândido's academy in Brazil and had the opportunity to watch Oliveira train and compete. Recognizing both the depth of the young São Paulo native's talent and the limitations of the local Brazilian circuit in fully testing or showcasing it, Dowie extended a direct invitation: come to the United States, stay with his family, and use his gym as a base to compete more regularly on the IBJJF circuit — widely regarded as the most competitive grappling network in the world.

Oliveira accepted the offer and made his first visit to the United States in 2018, a trip that marked the beginning of a lasting friendship and ongoing training relationship between the two. The transition to the American circuit produced immediate results, with Oliveira reaching the podium at the IBJJF American Nationals at purple belt in that inaugural year. He returned to the US on multiple subsequent occasions, each visit building on the competitive experience and connections forged during the last.

Gabriel Oliveira competes in the Pesadíssimo division — the super-heavyweight category for athletes over 100.50 kg (222.0 lbs) — and his black belt record reflects a focused and productive campaign on the IBJJF circuit.

2022: A Breakout Year on the IBJJF Circuit

The year 2022 proved to be Oliveira's most prolific as a black belt. He claimed gold at the IBJJF American Nationals and captured a title at IBJJF JJ CON, also reaching the podium in the absolute division at that same event. A third-place finish at the IBJJF Sul Brasileiro further underscored his consistency across multiple competitions and weight categories.

These results represent a concentrated and high-level push on the US-based IBJJF circuit, building on the foundation laid during his colored belt years and continuing the competitive momentum that has defined his career since the pivotal 2014 juvenile World Championship title.
