Giovanna Carneiro was born in January 2005 in São João de Meriti, Rio de Janeiro, and grew up in Belford Roxo, part of the greater metropolitan area surrounding the city. Jiu-jitsu was woven into the fabric of her life from the very beginning. Her father, Itagiba Carneiro, a practitioner and instructor himself, introduced Giovanna to the gentle art at the age of three. Training under his direct guidance from toddlerhood gave her an unusually deep technical foundation — one built across years of deliberate development rather than the compressed timelines most competitors experience before their first events.

Growing up in the Rio metropolitan area placed her inside one of Brazil's most competitive BJJ environments, where high-level training partners and experienced coaches are part of the everyday fabric of the sport. That combination of early immersion, elite surroundings, and unbroken instruction from a single coach laid the groundwork for a competitive career of remarkable consistency.

By her early teenage years, Giovanna had established herself as one of the most formidable juvenile competitors in Brazil. Her national arrival came in 2019 with gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals at the juvenile level, announcing her as a serious force on the domestic stage. That result carried her into the international arena, where she captured the IBJJF Pan Championship juvenile title in 2021.

Later that year, she won the IBJJF World Championship in the juvenile division — a landmark achievement for any young competitor — and returned in 2022 to defend the title, claiming back-to-back juvenile world championships. Consecutive world titles at that level demonstrated not only exceptional technical maturity but a competitive consistency rarely seen in athletes her age. Those victories cemented her status as the dominant juvenile competitor of her era and set the stage for an equally ambitious transition into the adult colored belt divisions.

Giovanna carried her juvenile momentum directly into the adult colored belt divisions without missing a step. The defining moment of her purple belt campaign came at the 2023 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, where she delivered a double gold performance — winning both her weight category and the absolute division. That result at the Brasileiros significantly raised her profile within the Brazilian competitive scene and signaled her emergence as an elite competitor beyond the juvenile ranks.

She maintained that form through her brown belt phase, competing at major IBJJF events and delivering performances that reinforced her standing among the best in her division. At the 2024 IBJJF World Championship, she produced a performance of sufficient quality that her father and instructor, Itagiba Carneiro, chose that occasion to mark the next major milestone in her career. Each belt transition reflected the same upward trajectory — technical depth accumulated since childhood expressing itself through increasingly high-stakes competition.

In June 2024, following her performance at the 2024 IBJJF World Championship, Giovanna Carneiro received her black belt from her father, Itagiba Carneiro. The promotion carried particular weight given that he had been her sole instructor from the age of three — making the ceremony a culmination of more than two decades of shared training and an unbroken coach-athlete relationship.

The transition to black belt competition produced immediate results. Later in 2024, she won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title, securing one of her first major victories at the sport's highest belt level. She also claimed gold at the IBJJF BJJ Pro Curitiba in 2024, confirming her capacity to compete at elite level without the adjustment period that many athletes require following promotion. Her rapid early success at black belt reflected the depth of experience accumulated across her juvenile, purple, and brown belt campaigns — as well as the continuity that training under a single instructor throughout her entire competitive life had provided.

For the formative years of her career, Giovanna represented GFTeam, the prominent Rio de Janeiro-based squad, as she built her juvenile record and began climbing the adult colored belt ranks. In 2023, following her double gold performance at the Brazilian Nationals, she moved to Team Fratres. That period proved to be a transitional phase rather than a permanent arrangement.

By 2024, Giovanna returned to competing under the GFTeam Redentor banner, as reflected in her official IBJJF athlete records. She represented GFTeam Redentor at major events including the 2024 São Paulo BJJ Pro, the 2025 Rio Spring International Open, and the 2025 Brasileiro, establishing it as her current competitive home. Through every change in affiliation, one element has remained constant: Itagiba Carneiro has continued as her primary instructor, providing an unbroken thread of technical continuity across every stage of her development and every competitive environment she has operated in.
