Arm Triangle Defense

Escape

Escaping the arm triangle (kata gatame): protect the neck by answering the phone with the trapped arm, deny the attacker's chest pressure and angle, and bridge toward the trapped side to make space before the choke settles.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Your own trapped shoulder is half the choke — shrug it up and 'answer the phone' to keep space
  • · The attacker needs the finishing angle off to the side; keeping them square kills the squeeze
  • · Bridging INTO the choke side, not away, opens the escape

Execution

  1. 1 As the head-and-arm lock forms, turn your palm to your ear to keep the trapped arm live
  2. 2 Tuck your chin and bridge toward the trapped-arm side
  3. 3 Walk your legs toward the attacker to square your body and steal their angle
  4. 4 Recover a frame across the chest as the pressure breaks and re-guard

Common mistakes

  • × Pushing on the attacker's head with the free arm, which does nothing against chest pressure
  • × Bridging away from the trapped side — this feeds your own shoulder deeper into the choke

Use it against
