Mounted Arm-triangle Choke
Submission
Also known as:
Arm Triangle From Mount
The Mounted Arm-triangle Choke is a head-and-arm compression choke finished from the mount position, using the opponent's own shoulder to block one side of the neck while the attacker's arm closes the other. It is typically set up when the opponent frames or turns to escape mount, exposing the space to insert the choking arm.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The opponent's own shoulder must be driven into one side of their neck to create a complete choke—your arm alone is not enough.
- · Heavy chest-to-chest pressure and hip control prevent the opponent from creating space or bridging out.
- · Squeezing the elbows together tightens the triangle of pressure around the neck and trapped arm.
- · Anticipate the opponent trying to straighten the trapped arm to relieve pressure by maintaining a tight clamp and shifting weight toward the choking side.
- · Lowering your head toward the mat on the choking side increases the angle and compressive force on the carotid arteries.
Execution
- 1 From mount, use cross-face pressure or bait a frame to swim your choking-side arm under the opponent's head and neck, trapping their arm alongside their head.
- 2 Lock a palm-to-palm or Gable grip behind the opponent's trapped shoulder, keeping your elbow tight against the far side of their neck.
- 3 Sprawl your legs back slightly and drive your weight forward and toward the choking side, pressing their shoulder firmly into their neck.
- 4 Lower your head to the mat on the choking side, squeeze your elbows together, and apply steady pressure until the tap.
Common mistakes
- × Leaving too much space between your chest and the opponent's chest, allowing them to hip escape, re-guard, or extract the trapped arm.
- × Gripping too high on the neck instead of behind the shoulder, which turns it into a crank rather than a clean blood choke and reduces finishing effectiveness.
- × Failing to angle toward the choking side and instead staying square, which prevents the opponent's shoulder from being properly driven into their own neck.
