Brian Mahecha

Brian Mahecha began his martial arts journey at age 15, initially training in kung fu and kickboxing. His passion for combat sports was evident early on. However, in 2006, during a pivotal kickboxing competition, Brian experienced persistent shoulder pain that led to a diagnosis of Soft Cell Tissue Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Following successful surgery, Brian overcame the illness, an experience that profoundly shaped his resilience and future athletic pursuits.

In 2007, Brian shifted his focus from striking arts to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, joining the prestigious American Top Team. His dedication quickly yielded results, earning him a blue belt by July 2008. Under the expert mentorship of Jonatas Gurgel, Brian rapidly progressed through the ranks, ultimately receiving his black belt in 2014. This achievement marked his emergence as a high-level competitor and respected instructor within the grappling community.

In 2021, Brian Mahecha co-founded Outer Heaven Jiu-Jitsu Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, alongside his twin brother Kevin Mahecha. Establishing the academy represented a significant transition from competitor to entrepreneur and team leader. Outer Heaven quickly gained recognition within the local grappling scene, developing homegrown talent such as Sebastian Serpa, whom Brian promoted to black belt. The academy serves as the Mahecha brothers' base of operations, reflecting their commitment to cultivating the next generation of skilled grapplers.

As co-head instructor at Outer Heaven Jiu-Jitsu Club, Brian is renowned for his inspirational teaching style, emphasizing resilience, personal growth, and technical precision. His experience as a cancer survivor deeply influences his coaching philosophy, motivating students to overcome personal challenges. Students frequently highlight Brian's mentorship and personal journey as instrumental in their own development, underscoring his role as a leader who consistently leads by example.

Brian Mahecha remains an active competitor in the IBJJF featherweight division (Peso Pena, 70kg/154lbs). He regularly participates in elite tournaments, including the 2023 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the 2025 IBJJF European Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Returning from a competition hiatus, Brian secured a bronze medal at the 2021 IBJJF Dallas Fall Open. Additionally, he delivered strong performances at regional events such as the 2022 IBJJF Austin Summer Open, notably competing against top-tier athletes like Samuel Nagai. These achievements highlight his continued relevance and competitiveness within the international grappling circuit.

Diagnosed with cancer at age 17 and now long in remission, Brian Mahecha actively shares his inspiring story through teaching, seminars, and mentorship. His journey from overcoming a life-threatening illness to becoming a respected black belt professor exemplifies resilience and determination. Widely recognized within the global grappling community, Brian serves as an inspirational figure, motivating others to persevere through adversity and achieve their goals both on and off the mats.
