Bruno Matias

Bruno Matias was born on May 25, 1983, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in the Cantagalo favela, where access to sport and structured training was far from guaranteed. His first connection to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came through watching his sister, Alessandra Matias, compete — Bruno attended events from the stands, captivated by the technical exchanges on the mats, yet the financial realities of his upbringing kept direct participation out of reach for some time.

Martial arts had already entered Bruno's life through capoeira, which he began practicing as a child. The turning point arrived in 1996, when Fernando Tereré came to Cantagalo carrying out the Projeto do Cantagalo — a social initiative designed to give disadvantaged children access to structured sports training. Tereré's project offered Bruno the opportunity he had been waiting for, and he threw himself into training under the guidance of one of Rio's most beloved figures in the sport. Bruno trained under Tereré through his blue belt, at which point the management of the Cantagalo Project transitioned to Ricardo Vieira, and with it, Bruno's ongoing development.

Ricardo Vieira — widely known as Ricardinho — guided Bruno Matias through every remaining belt from blue through to black as a product of Fightzone Academy and its former Cantagalo branch in Rio de Janeiro. Vieira's consistent, high-level instruction shaped Bruno into a competitive force, and in 2006, he awarded Bruno his black belt — the culmination of a decade-long journey that had begun in the streets of Cantagalo.

Bruno wasted little time establishing himself at the black belt level. In 2007, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open, announcing his arrival on the international stage. He followed that performance with CBJJE World Championship titles in 2007, 2008, and 2009 — a remarkable run of consistency that underscored the quality of the foundation built under Vieira's tutelage.

Following his rise through the black belt ranks in Brazil, Bruno Matias embarked on an international chapter of his career, spending several years living in France. Upon returning to Brazil, a longtime friend and fellow alumnus of the Cantagalo Project, Alan "Finfou," extended an invitation that would take his journey even further afield — to Sweden, where Bruno relocated and took on a teaching role that contributed significantly to the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Scandinavia.

His competitive presence in the region made an immediate impact, with a victory at the Scandinavian Open in 2009 reinforcing his credentials on European soil. Beyond competition, Bruno dedicated himself to coaching and sharing the knowledge accumulated under Tereré and Ricardinho Vieira, making Sweden a second home. His journey there stands as a testament to the far-reaching impact of the Cantagalo social project and the athletes it produced.

Running parallel to the trajectory that began under Tereré and Ricardinho Vieira, Bruno Matias developed through a distinct BJJ lineage rooted in Belo Horizonte. In part at his mother's encouragement — who believed that structured combat sports, with their emphasis on discipline and hierarchy, would productively channel her son's childhood hyperactivity — Bruno began capoeira at the age of eight and later added judo to his training.

Colored Belt Development and the Road to Golden Team

His BJJ development in this lineage began under coach Romualdo Lucas, a Nova União affiliate, who guided Bruno through the colored belt ranks to purple belt. At seventeen, Bruno applied for a scholarship at Felipe Pena's prestigious Project Golden Team, based in the state of Minas Gerais. Entry into the program demanded more than ambition — Bruno had to earn his place through a rigorous selection process against competing athletes. He secured his spot and relocated to Belo Horizonte to pursue a professional career in the sport.

Titles and Black Belt Promotion Under Felipe Pena

Under Felipe Pena's direction, Bruno gained considerable recognition on the Brazilian competition circuit. Pena — an ADCC and IBJJF World Champion — personally awarded Bruno his brown belt, lending significant weight to the promotion. His record across the colored belt divisions was impressive: CBJJO World Cup titles at purple belt in 2004 and at brown belt in 2005 and 2006, as well as CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NOGI titles at purple belt in 2018 and brown belt in 2019.

Through the network established by Felipe Pena's Golden Team program, Bruno Matias earned the opportunity to relocate to the United States, settling in Texas and joining Gracie Barra Westchase under coach Ulpiano Malachias. On March 13, 2021, after an extensive career across the colored belt divisions — marked by titles on multiple continents and development under some of the sport's most respected instructors — Malachias promoted Bruno to black belt.

Bruno moved quickly to make his presence felt at the new level. In 2021, he claimed gold at both the IBJJF American Nationals and the IBJJF American Nationals NOGI, and delivered a standout performance at the IBJJF Houston Open NOGI, capturing gold in both the weight category and the absolute division. His black belt career, built upon the dual foundations of the Cantagalo Project in Rio and the Golden Team program in Belo Horizonte, reflects the breadth and depth of a BJJ journey that has unfolded across multiple continents and under some of the sport's most distinguished instructors.
