Ruan Alvarenga was born in July 1998 in Divinópolis, a small city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, into a family for whom jiu-jitsu was not merely a sport but a way of life. His father, Iran Brasileiro Alvarenga, stands as one of the most respected BJJ instructors in Minas Gerais, and the academy he built became the bedrock of Ruan's athletic identity. By age four, Ruan was already training formally at his father's gym, absorbing the technical culture of grappling before most children have even encountered the sport.

The weight of Iran Brasileiro's influence on Brazilian jiu-jitsu gives extraordinary context to Ruan's upbringing. Among the prominent figures shaped by Iran Brasileiro's guidance are Rousimar Palhares, Marcelo Garcia, Paulo Rezende, and Rodrigo Ranieri — names that span elite gi competition and submission wrestling at the highest levels. Growing up immersed in this lineage exposed Ruan to both the technical rigor of gi jiu-jitsu and the competitive intensity of no-gi grappling from the very beginning of his athletic life.

Despite being raised in a traditional gi environment, Ruan Alvarenga's evolution as a no-gi specialist was shaped by two towering figures who passed through his father's world.

The first was Rousimar Palhares, the submission-wrestling specialist known as "Toquinho," who lived in the Alvarenga family residence for a significant period. Palhares's relentless pursuit of submissions and his deep commitment to no-gi grappling left a direct and lasting impression on young Ruan — transmitting not just techniques, but a competitive philosophy built around finishing fights.

The second defining influence was Marcelo Garcia, another product of Iran Brasileiro's academy who rose to become one of the most celebrated grapplers in the sport's history. As a teenager, Ruan studied Garcia's performances at ADCC World Championships with near-religious dedication, absorbing the fluidity, aggression, and technical precision that defined Garcia's style. That admiration eventually translated into a direct professional relationship. Garcia and his family took an active interest in Ruan's development, sponsoring his early trips to the United States — including his first visit while he was still a purple belt. Ruan Alvarenga's colored belt career was defined by consistent success across domestic and international competition, building a resume that announced him as one of the most promising grapplers of his generation.

His international caliber surfaced early at the 2017 IBJJF European Open, where he claimed gold as a purple belt — a result that demonstrated his ability to win against the world's best at his level. His no-gi credentials accumulated rapidly through this period. He reached the silver medal podium at the 2017 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship as a purple belt, then returned the following year to claim gold at the 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, establishing himself as the top purple belt no-gi competitor on the planet. On the domestic front, he won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi at the juvenile level and again as a purple belt in 2018, adding further depth to an already impressive record.

Upon advancing to brown belt, Ruan maintained his momentum without interruption. He captured the no-gi title at the 2019 IBJJF Pan Championship, then delivered the defining result of his pre-black belt career: victory at the 2019 Brazilian ADCC Trials. The promotion completed a journey that had begun on the same mats, under the same instructor, seventeen years earlier. Receiving his black belt from his father gave formal recognition to a competitive identity built across a lifetime of shared training.

Ruan Alvarenga wasted no time establishing himself at the black belt level. In 2021, he won the IBJJF South American Championship No-Gi — a strong opening statement in his first year at the sport's highest competitive tier — demonstrating that the transition had done nothing to diminish the effectiveness of his grappling.

His trajectory continued upward into 2023, when he claimed the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi title, one of the most competitive domestic events on the Brazilian grappling calendar, confirming his place among the country's leading no-gi competitors.
