Purple and Brown Belt Results
Manuel Diaz is widely regarded as one of the top American grapplers of his generation — a designation made all the more remarkable given that he did not begin training until his mid-twenties. His competitive record across multiple belt levels reflects a consistent ability to perform at the highest levels of IBJJF and international competition.
Diaz's most significant early result came in 2012, when he claimed the IBJJF World Championship title at purple belt — a landmark achievement that validated his rapid progression and signaled an exceptionally high competitive ceiling. That same year, he added the Las Vegas International Open title and the San Francisco International Open title at purple belt, along with a runner-up finish at the Pan American Championship.
By 2013, competing as a brown belt, his performance at the 2013 Copa Podio Middleweight Grand Prix drew national attention. Defeating experienced black belts while holding a lower rank is a rare feat in high-level grappling, and it cemented Diaz's reputation as an elite competitor capable of punching above his belt. That momentum carried into 2014, when he captured the Pan American Championship title at brown belt — demonstrating that his ascent was built on sustained competitive excellence rather than circumstance.
Black Belt Competition Record
Diaz competes in the Peso Meio-Pesado (88kg/194lbs) and Pesado (94kg/207lbs) weight divisions, giving him the flexibility to challenge a broad range of elite opponents. At black belt, he continued to accumulate results at IBJJF events throughout 2015, winning titles at the Las Vegas Summer International Open, the Boca Raton International Open, and the Chicago Spring International Open. His runner-up finish at the 2016 IBJJF Los Angeles BJJ Pro Championship further demonstrated his ability to compete with the world's best at the sport's highest level.
Across purple, brown, and black belt divisions, Diaz's record reflects a competitor who arrived late to the sport and made up for lost time with relentless dedication and remarkable consistency on the mat.
