Caio Terra was born in 1986 in Brazil. His journey into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in the early 2000s, sparked by a need for self-defense after experiencing bullying at school. Encouraged by his mother to persevere despite initial reluctance, Terra steadily honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the art. He earned his blue belt under the guidance of "Comprido" and Vieira, marking the formal start of his progression in the sport.

Terra advanced through the belt system at an extraordinary pace, achieving his black belt in only three years. In 2006, he received this promotion from Reyson Gracie and Paulo Maurício Strauch. His unprecedented ascent led the IBJJF to implement new regulations regarding minimum time at brown belt, underscoring the impact of his rapid development.

After relocating to the United States in 2008, he further distinguished himself with standout performances in absolute divisions at major tournaments. He has actively opposed the use of performance-enhancing drugs, contributing to the IBJJF's adoption of drug testing policies. Terra's efforts have helped raise the bar for fairness and sportsmanship, shaping the regulatory framework that governs modern BJJ.

In 2021, Terra sustained a significant hip injury from a car accident, necessitating surgery and a hiatus from active competition and training. Despite these setbacks, he remained dedicated to teaching and supporting his students. He received his fourth degree on his black belt in 2020 and maintains a strong commitment to returning to high-level tournaments upon full recovery, exemplifying resilience and unwavering dedication to the sport.

In August 2025, Terra's academy suffered severe damage when a vehicle crashed into the facility. Fortunately, no injuries occurred. Terra publicly expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the local community and acknowledged the San Jose Police Department's efforts in investigating the incident. He remains focused on rebuilding the academy and ensuring his students can resume training, highlighting the solidarity and perseverance that define the martial arts community in challenging times.
