Rodrigo Fajardo's path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began not with ambition, but with practicality. His parents, seeking an outlet for his restless, high-energy temperament, set out to find a physical activity that could channel his excess energy — with no particular martial art in mind. What altered the course of his life was the intervention of his grandfather, a man whose personal connection to jiu-jitsu stretched back to the 1940s. Upon learning of the family's plans, he pressed them to enroll Rodrigo specifically in a BJJ school, and they listened.

In 2000, at the age of 14, Rodrigo Fajardo stepped onto the mats for the first time at Gracie Barra in Curitiba, Brazil, under the guidance of coach Gustavo Muggiati. What began as a family compromise rooted in practicality would evolve into a lifelong vocation.

From his very first class, Rodrigo Fajardo trained under a single coach: Gustavo Muggiati. That continuity of instruction defined his development at every stage, and his progression through the ranks was consistently validated by results on the national stage.

As a blue belt, Fajardo claimed the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship title in 2002 — an early signal of his competitive potential. At purple belt, he reached the podium at the Brazilian National Championship in both 2004 and 2005, adding a Brazilian National Teams title in 2004. His brown belt campaign in 2007 delivered another Brazilian National Championship gold, affirming that his rise was no accident.

In December 2007, approximately seven years after stepping onto the mats for the first time, Gustavo Muggiati promoted Rodrigo Fajardo to black belt. Throughout every stage of his journey, Fajardo remained a proud and loyal representative of Gracie Barra Curitiba — a testament to the enduring value of consistency and trust in the student-teacher relationship.

Building Dominance on the Regional and Continental Stage

Following his black belt promotion, Rodrigo Fajardo established himself as one of the most formidable competitors in the Meio Pesado division (88kg/194lbs) of his generation. His early black belt years were defined by sustained success across both the Brazilian domestic circuit and the international stage. He claimed IBJJF South American Championship gold in 2009 and again in 2011, while also winning the IBJJF South Brazil Championship in 2009, 2010, and 2011 — a three-year run of consecutive titles that speaks to his consistency and conditioning across full competitive seasons.

The European Open Breakthrough

Seeking to elevate his physical preparation to match his technical development, Fajardo partnered with personal trainer Guilherme Paiva, focusing specifically on conditioning as a competitive weapon. The results materialized in 2012, when Fajardo claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open Championship — widely regarded as one of the most prestigious titles on the official IBJJF calendar. The victory marked a defining moment in his career, confirming his standing among the elite medium heavyweights of his era.

Sustained Relevance at the Highest Level

Fajardo's dedication to competition extended well into the following decade. In 2017, he earned a third-place finish at the IBJJF Pan American Championship — a result that underscored his continued relevance at the sport's highest level, long after his initial international breakthrough.
