Jose Junior was born on April 11, 1985, in Araruama, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — a city that would serve as the launching pad for a remarkable martial arts career. Like many Brazilian athletes of his generation, he sampled football and tennis before finding the discipline that would define his life. At age 15, he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a turning point that redirected his athletic ambitions entirely.

His introduction to the sport came under the guidance of coach Juarez Soares, whose instruction laid both the technical and competitive foundations Jose would build upon throughout his career. Competing for Araruama Jiu-Jitsu, he developed not only his game but a competitive identity firmly rooted in his hometown — one that would carry him to podiums across Brazil and, eventually, the world.

Blue and Purple Belt: Establishing a Championship Pedigree

Jose Junior's ascent through the belt ranks was defined by consistent excellence at every stage. At blue belt, he announced himself as a serious competitor by claiming back-to-back CBJJ Brazilian National Championship titles in 2002 and 2003, establishing a pattern of podium performances that would follow him through each subsequent promotion.

At purple belt, he continued to raise his ceiling. He reached the podium at the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship in both 2004 and 2005, finishing third and then runner-up, while also capturing the IBJJF European Open title in 2005. His game was evolving rapidly — and the results reflected it.

Brown Belt and Black Belt Promotion

The move to brown belt brought further confirmation of his elite status. In 2006, he won both the IBJJF Pan American Championship and the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship, cementing his reputation as one of the most accomplished prospects in Brazilian competition.

In 2007, Carlos Gracie Junior awarded Jose his black belt — a milestone reflecting both his technical mastery and the deep trust of one of the sport's most prominent figures. The transition to black belt competition was seamless: that same year, he claimed the IBJJF European Open in both his weight category and the absolute division, signaling that his game was fully prepared for the sport's highest level.

Jose Junior's sustained competitive success and personal character earned the direct attention of Carlos Gracie Junior, the head of the globally recognized Gracie Barra organization. Recognizing both his skill and his capacity to lead, Carlos Gracie Junior extended a personal invitation for Jose to travel to the United States and assume the role of head coach at a Gracie Barra franchise.

The move marked a significant professional evolution — from elite competitor to full-time instructor and team leader within one of BJJ's largest and most established international networks. Taking the Helm of UAE's National Program

Following his tenure in the United States, Jose Junior transitioned to a new and equally impactful role, joining the BJJ development program in the United Arab Emirates. As grappling coach within the UAE's national-level competitive structure, he became a central figure in the country's ambitions to build a BJJ program capable of performing on the international stage.

Representing the Emirates Team, he guided and competed alongside UAE athletes at high-profile events including the World Pro Cup and ADCC, bringing the organizational experience and competitive pedigree accumulated over more than a decade on the mats. His dual role as both coach and active competitor gave his athletes a practitioner who led by example at every level.

Continued Elite Performance at Black Belt

On the competition floor, Jose continued to demonstrate elite-level performance well into his black belt career. He reached the final of the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro No-Gi in 2011 and claimed runner-up in the absolute division at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro No-Gi in 2016, before capturing the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro Championship outright in 2017 — a victory that stands as a defining achievement of his black belt career and a testament to the sustained quality of his grappling game.
