Uanderson Ferreira

Uanderson Ferreira was born on January 10, 2001, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in Morro do São João, a favela in the Engenho Novo neighborhood of the city's northern zone. From an early age, he gravitated toward physical activity, with football (soccer) and capoeira serving as his primary disciplines and earliest competitive outlets.

At age 8, his parents made a deliberate decision to enroll him in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Living in an environment where gang violence and crime were constant realities, they sought to keep their son occupied and off the streets while they worked. The decision proved transformative. His first instructor, Marcio Carreira, quickly identified exceptional talent in the young athlete and became a pivotal figure — not only in Ferreira's technical development but in shaping his trajectory as a person.

It was Marcio Carreira who ultimately opened the door to Ferreira's professional future. Leveraging his influence and connections within the sport, Carreira facilitated Ferreira's relocation to the United Arab Emirates while he was still a blue belt — a move that allowed him to earn a living through jiu-jitsu at a formative stage of his career.

Arrival and Early Dominance

Upon arriving in the UAE, Ferreira joined Commando Group, one of the most prominent jiu-jitsu teams in the country. Training under coaches Thiago Barreto, Bruno Barreto, and Igor Silva, he found an environment that proved critical to his rapid ascent as a competitor.

Ferreira's dominance in the AJP circuit emerged quickly and with remarkable consistency. He captured the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro title at three consecutive belt levels — blue belt in 2019, purple belt in 2020, and brown belt in 2021 — demonstrating the rare ability to excel and adapt across each phase of development.

Competing Up: The Black Belt Year as a Brown Belt

The AJP ruleset includes a provision requiring World Pro champions to compete at the next belt rank, a rule that significantly shaped Ferreira's career path. Having won the World Pro at brown belt, he was required to compete in the black belt division for a full year while still wearing a brown belt.

Rather than a stumbling block, that year became a proving ground. Ferreira finished 2022 with a 26-6 record in the AJP circuit and a 42% submission win rate — numbers that confirmed he could operate at the sport's elite level well before receiving his black belt. On February 4, 2023, that formal recognition arrived when Marcio Ferreira promoted him to black belt.

Black Belt Breakthrough

Ferreira's black belt chapter continued where the previous year left off. He posted 10 wins with a 60% submission rate, with his sole loss stemming from injury rather than defeat on the scoreboard. On November 9, 2023, he made his first attempt at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro title as a black belt — a milestone that marked the culmination of years of preparation under the Commando Group banner.

One of the defining marks on Ferreira's black belt record came at the 2024 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, where he claimed gold — a result that appeared to confirm his standing as one of the division's top competitors. The title was subsequently stripped, however, after Ferreira failed USADA drug testing for THC metabolites, nullifying the result and removing the championship from his record.

The violation dealt a substantial blow to Ferreira's professional standing. Beyond the loss of the title itself, the disqualification drew public scrutiny during what had otherwise been a period of strong competitive output. The episode stands as a significant chapter in Ferreira's career and reflects the broader enforcement of anti-doping standards that has intensified across competitive jiu-jitsu.
