Jorge Pereira

Raised in Volta Redonda, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jorge Pereira later relocated to Nova Ipanema in Rio's South Zone — a move that placed him at the center of a thriving early BJJ culture. At 15, he received his first introduction to jiu-jitsu from Marcelo Behring, one of the pioneering figures in the sport's development in Brazil. That early exposure embedded Pereira within the Rio jiu-jitsu scene during one of the art's most formative periods, laying the groundwork for a career that would span decades and cross continents.

In 1986, Jorge Pereira earned his black belt under Rickson Gracie, cementing his place within one of the most respected lineages in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The achievement marked not only a technical milestone but the launch of a long and distinguished career in vale tudo — the no holds barred format that preceded modern mixed martial arts.

Recognized as one of the foremost defenders of the traditional Brazilian grappling style in NHB competition, Pereira carried the art's principles into a raw and unregulated arena throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s. His vale tudo career spanned two decades of Brazilian combat sports history, a period during which the discipline evolved rapidly and fighters of his background played a defining role in shaping its character. Pereira competed persistently until 2008, when a knee injury compounded by the loss of vision in one eye brought his active career to a close.

Alongside his competitive career, Jorge Pereira built a reputation as one of the most impactful coaches of his generation. His instruction produced a roster of standout athletes — among them Leo Dalla, Otavio Duarte, Paulo Guillobel, Wander Braga, and Luiz Guigo — each of whom went on to leave their own mark on the sport.

In 1999, Pereira relocated to the United States, settling in Miami by 2000. Working initially as a bouncer to support himself, he simultaneously developed his academy, establishing Jorge Pereira Jiu Jitsu as a serious training hub in South Florida. His capacity to compete at a high level while building an institution around him spoke to the full breadth of his commitment to the art.

His competitive output during this period extended well into the Masters divisions. Pereira claimed the Pan American Championship title in 2002, 2003, and 2004 in the Senior 1 category, then added the World No-Gi Championship gold in the Senior 2 division in 2008 — results that affirmed his technical longevity even as his vale tudo days drew to a close.

In 2007, Jorge Pereira stepped into one of the more unconventional chapters of Brazilian combat sports history. Approached by Jason Atkins, he agreed to serve as the face of Rio Heroes, an extreme events online channel built around the raw, unfiltered ethos of old-school no holds barred competition. The promotion set itself apart by staging events in some of Brazil's most well-known favelas, creating an atmosphere unlike anything else in the fight business at the time.

Rio Heroes drew a dedicated audience hungry for a return to the uncompromising roots of NHB. The promotion's run proved short-lived, however. In 2008, a news report raised suspicions of illegal gambling connected to the events, leading to its shutdown. Pereira's involvement continued through the organization's active period, which extended to approximately 2009.

Jorge Pereira's decades of service to Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a competitor, coach, and ambassador have been formally recognized through a series of significant rank promotions. On December 9, 2013, the USBJJF awarded Pereira his coral belt — a milestone reflecting the depth and longevity of his contributions to the art. The IBJJF formally recognized the rank in 2017, aligning his standing across the sport's major governing bodies.

On November 6, 2022, Pereira was promoted to the 8th degree red and white coral belt, one of the highest ranks attainable in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The promotion traces the full arc of a career that began on the mats of Rio de Janeiro under Marcelo Behring and Rickson Gracie and has continued through decades of competition, coaching, and institutional leadership. As an 8th degree coral belt, Pereira stands among a small and distinguished group of individuals whose contributions to the global BJJ community have earned the sport's highest forms of recognition.
