Dalla awarded Irvin his black belt, cementing a lineage connection that would anchor the credibility of his later coaching career. Irvin competes in the Peso Pesado division at 94 kilograms and built much of his competitive record in the Master 2 Super Heavy category at the international level.

Irvin's competitive record reflects both early promise and lasting endurance as an athlete. He captured the Gracie Open Championship in 1997 and placed second at the CBJJ Brazilian Teams National in 1999, establishing himself as a capable competitor during his formative years.

His most significant achievements came at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, where he won gold in the Master 2 Super Heavy division in 2008. Returning to claim the same title again in 2012 speaks to a sustained level of physical conditioning and technical sharpness that few competitors maintain across that span of time. Drawing on his marketing degree, Irvin developed branded programs including "The Grappling Blueprint" and an accelerated curriculum promoted as "Get your BJJ Black Belt In 3 And A Half Years." The commercial framing of these programs drew criticism from purists who felt it ran counter to the culture of the sport. Over time, however, the results produced by his academy shifted the conversation. His team became the first American academy to consistently make a mark on the international competitive scene, demonstrating that his methods produced genuine skill alongside commercial visibility.

Among the most accomplished products of his coaching are JT Torres, James Harbison, and Mike Fowler — each of whom achieved significant results at the highest levels of competition and helped establish the academy's reputation as a serious training environment.

In 2008, Lloyd Irvin faced a situation that brought his martial arts training into sharp real-world focus. During a home invasion, he was confronted by an armed intruder and used his grappling and self-defense skills to disarm the attacker. The incident received wide coverage and was frequently cited as a concrete example of the practical value of the techniques he taught and trained.

In early 2013, two of Irvin's students, Nicholas Schultz and Matthew Maldonado, were charged with rape following an incident on New Year's Eve. The charges drew widespread media coverage and directed intense criticism toward Irvin personally, raising questions about the culture of his academy and his responsibility as its head instructor. Irvin responded with a public relations campaign intended to manage the negative narrative, but the campaign itself drew criticism and was widely viewed as inadequate given the seriousness of the allegations. In November 2013, both Nicholas Schultz and Matthew Maldonado were found not guilty of the charges.
