Andris Brunovskis

Andris Brunovskis was born on August 8, 1990, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 16. His first coach, Darren Branch of Evolution Jiu-Jitsu — a gym that would later affiliate with Gracie Humaitá — provided the technical foundation that would come to define his dynamic, submission-oriented style.

As Brunovskis began making regular trips from Cleveland to Sacramento to visit family, he seized the opportunity to broaden his development by training with Cassio Werneck at Werneck's academy. Splitting time between Branch in Cleveland and Werneck in Sacramento exposed him to multiple coaching perspectives at a critical stage of his growth, sharpening his understanding of the game from complementary angles.

While competing on the Ohio circuit, Brunovskis attracted the attention of Lloyd Irvin, who recognized his exceptional potential and offered him a fully funded, full-time training arrangement. Brunovskis accepted, relocating to the Maryland-based Team Lloyd Irvin and immersing himself in the team's intensely competitive fighter-house environment, where training and competition dominated every aspect of daily life.

His contributions to the team extended beyond his own performance. Brunovskis played a key role in persuading Keenan Cornelius to join Team Lloyd Irvin — a decision that would significantly shape Cornelius' early competitive career. The period under Irvin's program proved highly productive, as Brunovskis competed at an elite level and continued building his reputation as one of the most exciting grapplers in the sport.

That momentum was interrupted when a scandal broke in early 2013, implicating the team's leadership in the alleged rape of a fellow student and exposing deeply troubling details about the organization's culture. Brunovskis regrouped and returned to the mats in 2014 under Atos Jiu-Jitsu, reuniting with a number of former teammates. In September 2014, André Galvão awarded Brunovskis his black belt, a formal recognition of the mastery he had demonstrated across years of elite competition.

From the earliest stages of his career, Brunovskis built his identity around a creative and unpredictable open guard game that set him apart from his contemporaries. His approach to grappling was never passive — he pursued submissions relentlessly and earned a reputation as a finisher that held firm across every belt level from blue through brown and into black belt.

Following the disruption caused by the Team Lloyd Irvin fallout, Brunovskis made an emphatic statement upon his return to competition in 2014, winning the IBJJF Pan American Championship at brown belt and signaling that his time away from the spotlight had done nothing to diminish his competitive edge.

Black Belt Titles and International Success

As a black belt, Brunovskis continued to accumulate results on the international stage. He claimed the IBJJF/JBJJF Asian Open title in both 2015 and 2017, the IBJJF Pan Pacific Championship in 2017, and back-to-back IBJJF Las Vegas Open titles in 2016 and 2017, adding the IBJJF San Diego Open in 2017 to that run.
