Breno Bittencourt

Born on July 7, 1989, in Brazil, Breno Bittencourt laid the groundwork for his martial arts career well before stepping onto the BJJ mats. His journey began at age four with judo — a discipline that instilled core principles of balance, leverage, and competitive mindset, all of which would translate directly into his grappling development. At thirteen, he made the natural transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, beginning his gi training under instructor Marco Aurélio and setting himself on a path that would come to define much of his adult life.

As Bittencourt progressed through the ranks, he trained under several instructors, each shaping different dimensions of his game. His journey ultimately led him to Rio de Janeiro, where he found a permanent home with the Carlson Gracie team under the guidance of Alan Moraes. That association proved to be the most consequential of his career, anchoring both his technical identity and his competitive trajectory within the Carlson Gracie lineage.

Bittencourt's path to the black belt was anything but conventional. After advancing through the colored belt ranks under multiple instructors, he made the deliberate decision to step away from competition for four years to complete a university degree in Information Technology. That hiatus paused his BJJ development at a critical juncture, but it also demonstrated the discipline and long-term thinking that would later define his approach to the sport.

Return, Commitment, and a Breakthrough Season

Upon completing his degree, Bittencourt returned to the mats with sharpened focus and renewed purpose. He took the further step of leaving his full-time job to pursue life as a full-time competitive athlete — a calculated risk that his results would go on to justify. Training within the Ares BJJ / Alan Moraes BJJ (AMBJJ) association, one of the most accomplished branches of the Carlson Gracie Academy, he channeled his energy into the 2015 brown belt season with remarkable consistency.

That year marked a genuine breakthrough. Bittencourt captured the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship in both gi and no-gi formats, added the IBJJF South American Championship to his résumé, and claimed gold at several international opens — including the IBJJF Rio BJJ Pro, the IBJJF Rio Fall International Open, and the IBJJF Rio Winter International Open. The volume and quality of those performances made a compelling case for his readiness at the next level. In July 2016, Alan Moraes recognized that body of work by promoting Bittencourt to black belt — a milestone representing years of sacrifice, strategic development, and competitive resolve.

Bittencourt's preparation reflects the demands he places on himself as a full-time competitor. His daily schedule incorporates up to four training sessions, blending BJJ mat work with weight lifting and CrossFit to build the physical foundation required to compete at the sport's highest levels. That integrated approach to conditioning has been central to his ability to maintain intensity and sharpness across extended competition seasons.

Navigating the Financial Demands of Elite Competition

The realities of top-level competition extend well beyond training. Competing on the IBJJF circuit requires significant investment in travel, entry fees, and logistics — a consistent pressure point for Brazilian athletes without institutional sponsorship. Bittencourt has spoken openly about these challenges. With support from his uncle, he traveled to Portugal for the 2016 IBJJF European Open, a meaningful step in building his international competitive profile.

That experience in Lisbon came with its own complications. In the semi-final, Bittencourt suffered a loss to Tanno "Xuxa" of Infight Academy in a match widely considered controversial — a result that highlighted the fine margins separating advancement from elimination at elite level. Rather than derail his ambitions, the outcome reinforced his determination to pursue a World title for as long as his circumstances allow.
