Hunter Ewald

Born on April 7, 1994, Hunter Ewald grew up in Hawaii within a family for whom Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was not simply a sport but a way of life. His father, Bruno Xavier Ewald, is a BJJ black belt widely recognized as a pioneer of the martial art in the Hawaiian Islands. Hunter spent his earliest years on jiu-jitsu mats, shaped by that immersive environment from infancy.

The Ewald family's deep ties to Hawaii's surfing culture proved equally influential. It was through a connection forged during one of Lauro's trips to Hawaii that Bruno Xavier Ewald was introduced to Roberto Cyborg Abreu—a meeting that would prove pivotal in Hunter's development as a competitor. Surfing and grappling were interwoven threads in the Ewald household, and that cultural crossroads soon opened doors to one of BJJ's most prominent competitive teams.

The relationship between the Ewald family and Roberto Cyborg Abreu deepened when Cyborg visited Hawaii for the 2010 IBJJF Honolulu Open and spent time at the Ewald residence. That visit left a lasting impression, and Cyborg extended an invitation for Bruno Xavier Ewald and his family to train at Fight Sports Academy in Miami, Florida.

Hunter was 16 years old at the time, having just completed high school. What began as periodic trips to Miami evolved into a regular part of his competitive preparation. Representing Fight Sports Academy on the IBJJF circuit, he quickly earned recognition as one of the top young prospects in the lower belt divisions, establishing himself within a program renowned for producing elite-level grapplers.

Blue and Purple Belt: Building a Championship Foundation

Hunter Ewald's rise through the IBJJF ranks began with consistent podium appearances at blue belt in 2012. He claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi and followed it with a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi—early signals that he possessed the competitive instincts of a future black belt champion.

His purple belt years sustained that trajectory. Multiple World Championship podium finishes in 2013 and 2014 added further depth to his résumé, along with a gold medal at the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi in 2013.

Brown Belt and Black Belt Promotion

As a brown belt, Hunter reached his greatest pre-black belt success. Competing in the Meio Pesado division, he captured back-to-back medals at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2015 and 2016, while adding further hardware at the IBJJF World Championship and No-Gi Pan Ams.

In July 2016, Bruno Xavier Ewald promoted his son to black belt—a milestone carrying deep personal meaning given the father-son bond at the heart of Hunter's entire journey in the sport. The promotion stood as a direct acknowledgment of the credentials Hunter had accumulated on the mat and the lifelong dedication he had demonstrated since his earliest days training in Hawaii.

Black Belt Competition

At the black belt level, Hunter continued to perform on the IBJJF circuit, earning gold at the IBJJF American Nationals in 2019. That result further cemented his standing as one of the top grapplers of his generation to emerge from the Hawaiian Islands.
