Masahiro Iwasaki

Born on January 27, 1989, in Kobe, Japan, Masahiro Iwasaki built his earliest martial arts identity through karate before a single fight redirected his path entirely. Watching the 2002 MMA bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Bob Sapp, he witnessed grappling executed at the highest level — a display of technical dominance that proved transformative. That moment steered him decisively toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and at the age of 15, he began training under Yasuhiro Miyamoto, laying the technical and competitive foundation that would carry him to the top of Japanese grappling.

Yasuhiro Miyamoto served as Iwasaki's formative instructor, instilling the fundamentals and competitive mindset that would define his career. In December 2010, Marco Barbosa awarded Iwasaki his black belt — a milestone that recognized both his technical mastery and his unwavering dedication to the sport.

Following his promotion, Iwasaki expanded his international footprint by spending time coaching in Australia, an experience that deepened his appreciation for BJJ as a global discipline. He has since established himself as a central figure at Carpe Diem in Tokyo, one of Japan's most respected academies.

Technical Identity

Iwasaki competes in the Peso Leve division (76 kg / 168 lbs) and has built his reputation around a deep mastery of the Deep Half-Guard. Few competitors at his level wield this position with the same precision and consistency — his command of its entries, sweeps, and control sequences makes him a technically demanding opponent for grapplers at every level.
