About this video
Using the lapel from a closed guard position can be an effective counter to a Tozi pass or to create a sweep situation. Here's how:
- From a closed guard position, break your opponent's posture and fish for their lapel. This can also be done off a Tozi pass situation.
- Feed the lapel to your other hand and use your free hand to frame on the opponent's shoulder to prevent them from gaining position.
- Kick your leg through while maintaining the grip on the lapel. Be ready to use the rocking chair principle to sweep your opponent.
- As your opponent attempts to smash your leg, immediately use your hips like a rocking chair to sweep them. Keep the grip on the lapel behind them, making it difficult for them to come back into your guard.
- Keep the lapel inside your leg and complete the sweep. Wait for your opponent to start executing the pass to avoid ending up in half guard.
- As your opponent tries to smash your leg, pass the guard, kick, and keep the lapel trapped under your knee to complete the sweep. The lapel will restrict your opponent's movement.
