About this video
When executing an attack from the guard, a common defensive tactic is for the opponent to hug the head, bringing their weight on top. This is countered with a variation of the slip, referred to as slip number two.
- While in guard, if the opponent hugs the head, it becomes difficult to move to cruise control or execute an armbar as the head is in the way.
- If the opponent's pressure is weak, it's possible to push out and attack with an inverted armbar or move into cruise control.
- If the opponent is applying strong pressure, it becomes difficult to push out. In this case, use the free hand to frame on the hip, pushing against the hip bone to create space.
- As the opponent applies more weight, it becomes easier to slip. Maintain the grip on the sleeve and punch through the created space.
- Quickly switch grips, grabbing the opponent's wrist with the free hand while the other hand breaks them down.
- From this position, it's possible to take the back directly or break the opponent down into the tight down position without arm isolation.
- If the opponent is slow to hug the head, it's possible to avoid the head hug entirely and move directly into cruise control.
- If the opponent is hugging the head halfway, keep the sleeve, kick out, trap the arm, and execute a quick armbar.
