Here's a breakdown of the Lapel Tie-Down technique:
- Start by loosening your opponent's lapel. You don't need to make it obvious what you're planning to do.
- Break down your opponent's posture. This can be done either when they move or by using an arm isolation posture break.
- Perform a hip escape and tie down your opponent. Reach over for the far lapel.
- Once you have the far lapel, go under your leg and feed it to your other hand. Extend your hips and maintain control.
- Your free hand can be used to keep your opponent away or to get a deep collar grip.
- If your opponent doesn't move, go over your leg and get the lapel. This leaves their arm vulnerable to various attacks such as the keyboard attack or an inverted arm bar.
- If your opponent moves their arm out of the way, extend your hips, push their arm across and pull the lapel to complete a back take. Do not let go of the lapel.
- Keep pulling the lapel back. If your opponent tries to escape, roll with them. They can only roll into you.
- Being one step ahead allows you to connect with other techniques. Pull and break your opponent down, look for the lapel, feed it to your other hand, extend and clamp.
- When clamping, remember to put the leg that's on top under so you can stretch your opponent out. This creates twice as much pressure.
- From this position, you can extend your hips, push your opponent's sleeve and complete the back take.
