About this video

Dealing with an under-hook De La Riva (DLR) where the opponent grabs the shin:

  1. Maintain weight back and use a post to prevent being dragged forward. The opponent will typically have a collar grip and a hook inside.
  2. Block the hook by pushing the opponent's heel towards their buttocks, step away, and pull the foot over the hip to get it back on the outside.
  3. Use the shin to pummel if necessary, circling the foot back inside to block the hook.
  4. Keep weight anchored back and heavy, avoiding giving the back or driving forward.
  5. Find the same position as before, pushing the opponent's leg open and bringing their hips up.
  6. Prop the opponent's hip up and switch grips. The opponent may still have a strong underhook but may not be grabbing the shin.
  7. Ensure the knee crosses over the opponent's bicep, creating a bicep slicer position.
  8. Slide the foot through to return to the stack position, treating it as a pin to keep the opponent stuck and uncomfortable.
  9. When ready, give the opponent weight, close the elbows, and complete the guard pass.
  10. React quickly when the opponent comes underneath, stepping around the hook and collar grip if necessary.
  11. If the grip needs to be broken, do so after repositioning, or push the opponent forward to make the grip ineffective, causing them to let go.
  12. Maintain the stack and cut the knee backwards across the opponent's bicep, returning to the stack position.
  13. Close the elbows to avoid a scramble if losing the angle, keeping the opponent's shoulders flat to progress to the pass.
