About this video
Overcoming the De La Riva guard involves converting it into a half guard and pinning the opponent flat to pass. The key steps to dismantle a De La Riva guard and pass are:
- Remove the opponent's foot from your hip, preferably moving it outside your hip to reduce their control.
- Break the opponent's grip on your ankle if it prevents you from getting close. If the grip is not strong, you may leave it temporarily.
- Work to beat the De La Riva hook by unwinding it and positioning your armpit in front of the opponent's knee, while monitoring their points of control.
- If the opponent still holds your ankle, exploit their vulnerability by hugging around their head or grabbing the side of their body and closing your elbow.
- With your other hand, secure a grip on the opponent's body to assist in passing.
- Drive your knee through by moving it in a large circular motion over and back under the opponent's leg to gain leverage and pop their grip on your ankle.
- As the grip breaks, execute a windshield wiper motion with your feet to transition into side control.
Throughout this process, maintain tightness and control, using grips to pull yourself chest-to-chest with the opponent and drive your knee through to effectively pass the guard.
