About this video
Transitioning from De La Riva to Reverse De La Riva, the focus shifts to funneling the opponent into a half stack position. Instead of blocking the far leg, allow it to come up and crunch the opponent's body, using an arm to prevent them from getting underneath. Scoop under the opponent's leg to create a shallow stack position, maintaining a shallow grip on the gi to avoid compromising balance.
Open the gi, scoop under the leg, and secure a mid-level grip. Walk the opponent back, bundling them up and initiating a folding pass. Use the chest to drive forward, aiming to get ear to ear and secure a nearside underhook. Maintain a grip with slack on the lapel to prevent the opponent from pushing away and disengaging.
Align shoulders and chest with the opponent's, but be mindful of the leg and hook blocking the pass. Maintain a tripod position to pin the opponent's shoulders, turn the knee in to disconnect their toes, and pummel the other foot to find their ankle. Extend and circle the foot out, potentially keeping the hook to exchange control.
If the opponent's leg is a nuisance, push it away and scoop it up. Get underneath the knee, use the chest, knee, or forearm to push their knee across the body. Tripod and drive weight forward, placing the forehead on the floor next to the opponent's head. Roll the hip by turning the knee in, bring the free leg over to find the hook, and stretch it down to clear the knee line. Circle the foot out or exchange the hook to potentially expose the opponent's back.
This technique connects to the pressure passing concepts from the first volume, using a similar hook over the ankle to drag the opponent's knee line down and progress to control their shoulders, adapted here for a half stack scenario.
