In 2007, at the age of 11, Barbarotti walked into the gym of coach Ercules Malta in São Paulo. It was not until his older brother returned to Rio Preto and assumed responsibility for their father's care that Barbarotti was finally free to relocate. He made the move as a brown belt, joining Cicero Costha's program and stepping onto the international competition stage without delay.

The results came quickly. In 2016, Barbarotti earned third place at the IBJJF Pan Championship at brown belt — a strong debut on a major international platform. The following year, he added a silver medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, also at brown belt. In August 2017, Cicero Costha promoted him to black belt. Barbarotti won the IBJJF Toronto Open in both 2018 and 2019, back-to-back titles that underscored his consistency in the division.
