Fabricio Barbarotti was born on February 8, 1996, in São Paulo, Brazil. Sports came naturally to him from an early age, and his first serious pursuit was football/soccer during his pre-teens. A candid recognition of his limitations on the pitch ended that chapter quickly — but rather than turning him away from athletics, the experience pushed him toward martial arts, a world he had already grown fond of through combat films.

In 2007, at the age of 11, Barbarotti walked into the gym of coach Ercules Malta in São Paulo. He arrived with curiosity about combat sports and a hope of learning the striking techniques he had seen in movies. What he found instead was a grappling-focused environment that failed to immediately captivate him. Malta's class lacked training partners his age, and the absence of kicks and punches made it difficult for young Fabricio to connect with the art. After only a few weeks, he quit.

The story might have ended there. A chance encounter with one of Malta's students, however, persuaded Barbarotti to return — and within two weeks of coming back, he entered a local tournament and won. That victory reframed jiu-jitsu entirely. The competitive dimension of the sport ignited something the technical side alone had not. His engagement deepened further when coach Ercules welcomed him into a dedicated kids' program, finally providing the peer training environment he had originally been missing. Surrounded by children his own age, Barbarotti committed fully to the sport, training two to three times per day on weekdays. His admiration for Cicero Costha's work in the São Paulo capital grew steadily during this period — though life circumstances would delay that ambition for years to come.

Fabricio Barbarotti's path through the BJJ belt system is a study in patience shaped by personal responsibility. While many elite-level competitors trace an unbroken upward arc through the colored belts, Barbarotti's journey was defined by the quiet weight of caring for his elderly father. That obligation anchored him to his hometown of Rio Preto for much of his formative athletic years, limiting his access to high-level training environments and major competition throughout his blue, purple, and brown belt phases.

He had long admired the coaching philosophy and competitive results produced by Cicero Costha, but the move to São Paulo that would have allowed him to train under Costha remained out of reach. It was not until his older brother returned to Rio Preto and assumed responsibility for their father's care that Barbarotti was finally free to relocate. He made the move as a brown belt, joining Cicero Costha's program and stepping onto the international competition stage without delay.

The results came quickly. In 2016, Barbarotti earned third place at the IBJJF Pan Championship at brown belt — a strong debut on a major international platform. The following year, he added a silver medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, also at brown belt. In August 2017, Cicero Costha promoted him to black belt. Barbarotti's trajectory represents a rare competitive profile: an athlete whose rise to prominence came not from early prodigy status, but from delayed opportunity finally met with accumulated skill and hard-won determination.

Fabricio Barbarotti competes in the Peso Leve division (76 kg / 168 lbs) on the IBJJF and AJP global circuits. His black belt career has been defined by consistent international performances across multiple continents, and the momentum of his promotion carried directly into results: in 2017, within months of receiving his black belt, he captured gold at the IBJJF Cincinnati Open — a signal that his years of development had prepared him well for the sport's highest level.

Back-to-Back Titles and a Productive 2018–2019 Stretch

His 2018 and 2019 seasons represented the most concentrated stretch of competitive success in his career to that point. Barbarotti won the IBJJF Toronto Open in both 2018 and 2019, back-to-back titles that underscored his consistency in the division. In 2019 alone, he added the IBJJF New York Fall Open and the IBJJF London Winter Open to his record, demonstrating the ability to perform in varied environments across different continents. That same year, he claimed gold at the AJP British National Pro in the absolute division — a win that illustrated his competitive viability beyond his natural weight class and against a broader range of body types and styles.

Pandemic Era and Return to Competition

In 2020, Barbarotti won the P-Belum Invitational, extending his record into the pandemic-era competitive landscape. After circumstances forced a return to Brazil and then a relocation to Florida, he resumed his international campaign in 2022 with a gold medal at the IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open — confirmation that the competitive edge he had developed over years of circuit competition had not diminished.

Fabricio Barbarotti's transition to international competition was accelerated by a project launched in late 2017 by Fernando Zulik in collaboration with Cicero Costha in Canada. The initiative created a structured pathway for athletes from Costha's program to train and compete in North America over an extended period. Barbarotti took full advantage of the opportunity, and his time based in Canada coincided directly with his most productive stretch of open tournament results — including his back-to-back Toronto Open titles and his 2019 victories in New York and London.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought that chapter to an abrupt halt. Border restrictions and travel limitations made continued residence in Canada untenable, and Barbarotti returned to his hometown in Brazil. The enforced pause disrupted a competitive run that had been building steadily for several years.

In 2021, Barbarotti returned to North America, establishing himself in Florida. The move provided a stable foundation for the next phase of his career, with his 2022 IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open victory serving as early confirmation that the relocation had restored his access to the international circuit. His presence in the United States positions him to continue competing at the highest levels of the IBJJF and AJP calendars.
