Omoplata Escape

Escape

Escaping the omoplata: posture the moment the leg swings over the shoulder, keep the trapped arm's elbow tight, and either roll forward through the shoulder line or step around to clear the leg before the attacker sits up and controls the hips.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The omoplata needs your posture broken AND your hips pinned — deny either and it stalls
  • · Rolling forward relieves the shoulder before the attacker controls your far hip
  • · Clearing the head/leg line while they are still on their back beats fighting a seated omoplata

Execution

  1. 1 Posture up hard as the leg crosses your shoulder
  2. 2 Keep the trapped elbow bent and close to your ribs
  3. 3 Either dive-roll forward over the trapped shoulder, or step your legs around toward their head
  4. 4 Free the arm as the angle breaks and re-establish top position

Common mistakes

  • × Leaving the trapped arm straight, giving them the shoulder lock instantly
  • × Waiting until they sit up and grab the far hip — the escape window is before that

Use it against
