Nick Salles

Nick Salles was born on September 28, 1995, in Long Branch, New Jersey, and grew up in Oceanport along the Jersey Shore. Martial arts entered his life early, introduced as a practical means of building self-confidence and foundational self-defense skills. His first discipline was Taekwondo, which he embraced with genuine enthusiasm before transitioning to karate — competing seriously in both striking arts throughout his childhood.

During his pre-teen years, Salles enrolled at a local Tiger Shulman's school, where his first exposure to mixed martial arts (MMA) broadened his understanding of combat sports as a whole. He also wrestled through middle school and into high school, reinforcing the grappling instincts that would come to define his athletic identity. By the age of 13, the pull of jiu-jitsu had grown undeniable. Salles made a deliberate decision to leave striking arts behind and dedicate himself exclusively to life on the mat.

Building the Foundation

Nick Salles' first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor was Jason Scully, founder of the Grapplers Guide instructional series. Under Scully's guidance, Salles took his first structured steps in the sport, developing the technical foundation that would serve him throughout his competitive career. His development continued to be shaped by influential coaches including Jon Heleotis and Kurt Pellegrino, before Bill Scott awarded him his brown belt — a milestone that signaled his arrival as a serious competitive force.

Balancing Academia and Competition

The period surrounding his brown belt promotion coincided with the final stages of Salles' undergraduate studies. He earned a degree in Biology from Monmouth University while maintaining an active competitive schedule, demonstrating a disciplined ability to balance academic and athletic demands at a high level. With his brown belt secured and his sights set on the IBJJF World Championship, Salles sought an environment that could push his development beyond the local New Jersey scene. That search brought him to the Marcelo Garcia Academy in Manhattan, New York City, where he trained within Marcelo Garcia's acclaimed system.

The Pandemic, Philadelphia, and a Black Belt Promotion

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 disrupted the trajectory Salles had built. New York City's stringent public health restrictions forced jiu-jitsu academies to close, effectively halting his training at MGA. As restrictions persisted in New York while other regions gradually reopened, Salles and his training partner Daniel Maira sought an alternative path. That path led them to Philadelphia — and to a pivotal connection with Mikey Musumeci. Training alongside Musumeci as both a partner and student, Salles refined his game under one of the sport's most technically distinguished figures. In November 2020, Musumeci promoted Nick Salles to black belt, formalizing a relationship that had fundamentally reshaped his development as a practitioner.

The same circumstances that disrupted Nick Salles' training at the Marcelo Garcia Academy became the catalyst for one of the most significant decisions of his career. Rather than wait for conditions in New York to improve, Salles and fellow black belt Daniel Maira chose to build something of their own. Together, they co-founded Movement Art Academy in Philadelphia, establishing a training environment that reflected their shared values and competitive ambitions.

The academy's name carries meaning beyond branding. It speaks to a philosophy of jiu-jitsu rooted in expression, craftsmanship, and continuous refinement — themes consistent with the technical depth both Salles and Maira bring to their practice. With two accomplished black belts at its foundation, Movement Art was positioned from the outset as a serious competitive and instructional hub within the Philadelphia jiu-jitsu community. What began as a pragmatic response to an unprecedented disruption evolved into a lasting institution, representing Salles' commitment to both the sport and the city he now calls home.

Early Promise and Colored Belt Excellence

Nick Salles competes in the Featherweight division — classified as Peso Pena at 70 kg / 154.5 lbs — a weight class in which he has demonstrated consistent excellence across multiple rule sets and competition circuits. Known on the mats by the nickname "Tamandua," Salles established his competitive credentials early, winning the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship at the Juvenile level in 2011, a result that signaled elite potential well before his black belt years.

His colored belt career was defined by performances on some of the sport's most demanding international stages. Competing as a brown belt in 2019 and 2020, Salles earned podium finishes at AJP Grand Slam events in London, Abu Dhabi, and Tokyo — with his Grand Slam London appearance yielding a gold medal. In 2020, he also captured the F2W Gi Featherweight Championship at brown belt, adding a prominent professional grappling title to his growing résumé.

Black Belt Momentum

At the black belt level, Salles wasted no time building momentum, securing back-to-back victories at IBJJF Charleston Open events in 2021 and affirming his standing as a competitive force in his weight class. His career reflects a sustained presence across both gi and no-gi formats, spanning local, national, and international competition — underscoring a relentless commitment to testing himself at every level of the sport.
