Israel Sousa

Israel Sousa was born on April 25, 1998, in Fortaleza, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará. Raised in a household where jiu-jitsu was woven into daily life, his entry into the sport was almost inevitable. His father, Elinor Batista, and his older brother were both devoted practitioners, laying the groundwork for what would become a celebrated competitive career.

Israel began training at the age of five, though those early years on the mats were more about staying active than chasing titles. That mindset shifted after just one year, when his father entered him in a super-fight event held at Elinor's own gym. Israel won — and the taste of victory sparked a desire to compete. The road forward, however, carried its share of setbacks: four consecutive first-round losses dampened his enthusiasm considerably, and he stepped away from competition for over a year before returning with renewed focus and a string of wins to follow.

At 13, Israel sought to sharpen his throwing game by adding judo to his training schedule under Sensei Alex Sampaio. He entered four judo tournaments and claimed victory in three. The fourth ended with a broken arm sustained while posting to defend a takedown — a significant blow to his development. Though he later revisited judo training, the experience led him to a deliberate decision: he would refrain from competing under judo rules to protect his long-term ambitions in jiu-jitsu.

The relationship that would define Israel Sousa's competitive trajectory began taking shape in 2013, when his brother and a teammate traveled to Rio de Janeiro to train at GF Team's headquarters. That visit forged an early bond between the Fortaleza-based training group and one of Brazil's most decorated academies. Later that year, several of GF Team's top athletes made the journey to Fortaleza alongside coach Júlio César Pereira to compete, further cementing what would become a lasting inter-gym connection.

As a blue belt, Israel made his first trip to the Cachanga — GF Team's fighter-house in Rio de Janeiro — and the experience proved transformative. Immersed in a full-time competitor lifestyle, he embraced a schedule built around training camps, travel, and high-level competition, shuttling regularly between Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, and Ohio to sharpen his craft alongside elite teammates.

When coach Júlio César relocated to California, he extended a personal invitation to Israel — by then a purple belt — to join him and train full-time in Orange County. Israel accepted, and it was on American soil that he received his brown belt promotion. The timing created an unexpected competitive constraint: having held his purple belt for fewer than 18 months at the point of promotion, he was ineligible to compete in the brown belt division for much of 2018. When the window finally opened, he made the most of it without delay.

In June 2019, following one of the most dominant colored belt seasons in recent memory, coach Júlio César Pereira promoted Israel Sousa to black belt — a recognition of a career trajectory that had been building since his earliest days on the mats in Fortaleza.

The 2019 season represented the apex of Israel Sousa's colored belt career and announced him to the wider BJJ world as a generational prospect. Competing as a brown belt, he captured gold at both the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF World Championship, going undefeated across both events and delivering performances that left little doubt about his standing among the sport's elite prospects.

Those titles did not emerge in isolation. Israel had been building toward them across years of decorated colored belt competition. He claimed the IBJJF Juvenile World Championship in 2015, then added back-to-back IBJJF Pan Championship titles at blue belt in 2016 and 2017, alongside an IBJJF World Championship at blue belt in 2017. A Brazilian Nationals title at blue belt that same year further underscored his consistency. After his promotion to brown belt, he opened his account at that level with a gold medal at the AJP Grand Slam in Los Angeles in 2018, before his near-flawless 2019 run closed the chapter on an extraordinary colored belt career.

Spanning the juvenile, blue, purple, and brown belt divisions, the breadth and depth of Israel's amateur competitive record established him as one of the most decorated prospects to emerge from the IBJJF circuit. His promotion to black belt in June 2019 marked not just the end of that chapter, but the beginning of a far more demanding one.

Israel Sousa entered the black belt division as a representative of GF Team, competing in the Peso Pena weight class at 70 kg (154.5 lbs). The transition to the sport's most competitive tier brought the expected adjustment period, but his results on the international circuit demonstrated that his colored belt pedigree had prepared him well for the step up.

Among his early black belt highlights, Israel claimed gold at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2021 — one of the most prestigious titles on the submission grappling calendar outside of the IBJJF and ADCC circuits. That victory confirmed his ability to perform at the highest level of the black belt division. He also reached the podium at multiple AJP Grand Slam events during this period, earning silver at the Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi legs and bronze in Moscow — a run of results reflecting consistent presence among the world's elite competitors at his weight class.

On the IBJJF circuit, Israel added open tournament gold medals in Long Beach and Houston to his growing black belt record. Known within the competitive community by the nickname 'Rael,' Israel Sousa continues to build on the foundation laid during his remarkable colored belt years, representing GF Team and coach Júlio César Pereira at the sport's highest level.
