Lukete Silva

Born on April 11, 1996, Lucas Silva grew up in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, immersed in an active lifestyle that laid the groundwork for his athletic career. From a young age, he competed in youth soccer and school athletics, building the physical discipline and competitive instincts that would later define his approach to martial arts.

In his early teens, weight lifting became a regular fixture in Silva's routine at a local gym, where he trained alongside his brother. It was there that the two siblings first encountered taekwondo, watching classes conducted at the same facility. That exposure ignited a genuine interest in martial arts, and Silva soon began training at an academy that offered both taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

After several years on the taekwondo mats, a pivotal social connection redirected his path entirely. In 2013, he formed a close friendship with two school classmates enrolled in the academy's BJJ program, and that bond proved decisive. At 17 years old, Silva stepped onto the grappling mats for the first time — the beginning of what would become a defining chapter of his life.

Finding His Footing

Silva's introduction to jiu-jitsu came through Marcelo Lourenço, the instructor responsible for welcoming new students into the Cássio Francis class. From that initial contact, his development was shaped almost entirely by Francis — widely known as Cassão — one of the most respected and prolific coaches in Minas Gerais. Francis guided Silva through every belt promotion from white to black, forming an unusually cohesive and unbroken lineage.

A Decorated Colored Belt Career

From the earliest stages of his white belt career, Silva committed to full-time training, a level of dedication that translated quickly into results on the competition circuit. His colored belt years stand among the most decorated of any lightweight competitor from his generation.

At blue belt in 2016, he claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship and the 2016 IBJJF European Open, while also earning bronze at both the Pan American Championship and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals. As a purple belt in 2017, he reached the final of both the IBJJF World Championship and the Pan American Championship, confirming that his 2016 performances were no anomaly. His brown belt campaign delivered further validation, highlighted by gold at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 and a bronze at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Los Angeles the same year.

Black Belt Promotion

On December 19, 2018, Cássio Francis promoted Silva to black belt in a grading ceremony that completed a lineage in which Francis had overseen every single rank advancement. The promotion marked not only a personal milestone but the formal launch of Silva's professional career as a representative of Gracie Barra.

Establishing His Professional Identity

At the black belt level, Lucas Silva — known throughout the grappling community by his nickname Lukete — established himself as one of the premier competitors in the Peso Pluma division, encompassing athletes competing at 64 kg (141.5 lbs). The weight class is among the most technically demanding in the sport, requiring precise timing, guard retention, and the ability to impose pressure despite minimal weight advantage. Silva's transition to the professional ranks demonstrated that his decorated colored belt career was a reliable indicator of long-term potential.

Black Belt Podium Performances

Silva's black belt résumé reflects a steady accumulation of podium finishes across multiple formats and organizations. In 2019, he earned a bronze medal at the ACBJJ World Championship. In 2020, he appeared on the podium at both the CBJJ South Brazil Championship and the IBJJF Belo Horizonte Open, finishing as runner-up on both occasions. His most prominent black belt result came at the 2021 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, where he secured a silver medal — a performance that underscored his ability to compete at the highest level in both gi and no-gi formats.

Throughout his black belt career, Silva has maintained a consistent presence at regional and international events under the Gracie Barra banner, representing the Cassão Team and carrying forward the competitive tradition forged during his formative years in Belo Horizonte.
