Johnny Tama was born on October 20, 1992, in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Initially uninterested in martial arts, a street altercation in 2009 motivated him to pursue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Tama began training under Juan Miguel Iturralde, who provided the foundational skills and mentorship essential for his future competitive success.

In December 2019, Johnny Tama achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Hispanic athlete to win an adult black belt IBJJF world title, securing gold in the Lightweight division at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship No-Gi. This groundbreaking accomplishment elevated his international profile and established him as a pioneering figure for Ecuadorian and Latin American competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Johnny Tama represented Alliance from white belt through late 2022. In late 2022, he announced his departure from Alliance San Diego, subsequently training at Foundation BJJ in Hawaii in preparation for the No-Gi Pans. This marked Tama's transition toward an independent competitive path, enabling him to maintain elite-level training while exploring new competitive opportunities.

Following his shift to independent competition, Johnny Tama founded TAMA Jiu-Jitsu Academy in San Diego, California. As head coach and owner, Tama provides comprehensive gi and no-gi training programs tailored for both children and adults. The academy embodies Tama's realization of his personal "American dream" and serves as a central pillar of his personal brand and community involvement.

Initially lacking extensive wrestling experience, Johnny Tama began dedicating significant training time around 2022 to enhance his wrestling and takedown proficiency. Johnny Tama is widely recognized for his expertise in leg lock submissions, particularly heel hooks. Among his most notable victories is an inside heel hook submission against IBJJF champion Edwin Najmi, earning Submission of the Night honors at Fight 2 Win 180.
