In November 2020, Musumeci promoted both Maira and Salles to the rank of black belt — formalizing a mentorship that had already transformed both athletes.

Daniel Maira's brown belt years established him as one of the most formidable competitors of his generation in the featherweight division, contested at 70 kg (154.5 lbs) under IBJJF rules.
