Born on October 6, 1975, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fabio Andrade was immersed in martial arts from an early age. His introduction to combat sports came through a club offering both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where he built a grappling foundation that would serve him throughout his career. His commitment to Judo earned him a brown belt, 1st Kyu — a grade that speaks to his early technical seriousness.

Luis Hermínio Pessoa first encouraged Fabio to pursue Jiu-Jitsu more seriously, a nudge that would define the trajectory of his martial arts life. During his teenage years, Fabio trained with the Gracie family, absorbing the foundational principles of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at a formative stage. Ralph Gracie recognized his early promise with a blue belt promotion, while Royler Gracie and Arthur Cartiart jointly elevated him to purple belt — a milestone that marked the beginning of his deeper technical development.

Following his promotion to purple belt, Fabio made a pivotal move to UGF (Universidade Gama Filho), a team that would later evolve into GFTeam (Grappling Fight Team). There, he came under the tutelage of Julio Cesar Pereira, a master whose influence would shape his competitive development from that point forward. Under Julio Cesar's guidance, Fabio earned both his brown and black belts, the latter awarded by Daniel Almeida in December 2007 — a milestone reached at age 32.

Fabio's BJJ lineage traces through a distinguished line of practitioners: Mitsuyo Maeda, Luiz França, Oswaldo Fadda, Sebastião Ricardo, Wendell Alexander, and Daniel Almeida. His competitive record across belt levels reflects this disciplined approach — a Brazilian National Championship at blue belt in 1994, Pan American and World Cup titles at brown belt in 2007 and 2006 respectively, and a Sul Brasileiro championship at black belt in 2011.

Nova União's Bangu gym had served the community since 1998, providing Jiu-Jitsu access in one of Rio de Janeiro's most underserved neighborhoods. In 2005, Daniel Almeida invited Fabio Andrade to assist with free Jiu-Jitsu classes for local residents — an opportunity Fabio embraced with characteristic commitment. By 2006, he had assumed full leadership of the academy, transforming it into a hub for grassroots talent development.

The impact of his work at Bangu became a defining chapter in his career. Protocolo BJJ described Fabio as possessing 'the Midas touch' — recognition of his extraordinary ability to identify and cultivate elite athletes from within a community setting. Among the standout talents to emerge from the Bangu academy are Kaue Damasceno, Isaque Bahiense, and Marcio Andre, the latter of whom claimed the IBJJF World Championship title at brown belt in 2014 — a result that validated the program's competitive ambitions on the sport's biggest stage.

In 2012, the academy faced a serious setback when heavy rains caused significant structural damage to the facility. Support from Fabiano Marinho of Prime Sports made the subsequent refurbishment possible, restoring the gym and allowing the program to continue its work. The Bangu project stands as one of the clearest illustrations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's potential as a vehicle for both social development and elite athletic formation.

Fabio Andrade's role in GFTeam's global expansion began well before his move to Australia. In 2000, he played a central role in establishing the team's first international branch in Boston — a significant milestone in GFTeam's evolution from a Brazilian institution into a global network. This early international experience gave Fabio both the credibility and the practical blueprint to replicate the model elsewhere.

In 2009, Fabio relocated to Perth, Australia, with a clear mandate: to found a BJJ academy capable of meeting the region's growing demand for quality instruction. The Perth academy became GFTeam's first Australian branch, extending the team's international footprint into the Southern Hemisphere. Driven by strong local demand and the reputation Fabio had built across his competitive and coaching career, the gym gained traction swiftly.

This dual contribution — spearheading GFTeam's first international outpost in Boston and later founding its Australian chapter — places Fabio Andrade in a unique position within the team's history. His efforts were instrumental in transforming GFTeam from a nationally recognized Brazilian team into a brand with genuine global reach.

Beyond his work in Perth and Bangu, Fabio Andrade serves as a BJJ coach at the Nova União camp, where his contributions have been credited with revitalizing the team's competitive profile.
