His debut came in April 1957 against Artur Emídio, a fight Robson won by submission. The victory quickly entered Gracie lore — he refused to release the submission hold after his opponent had been defeated, forcing the referee to physically intervene and separate the two men. A further measure of his character came when Robson accepted a fight against Waldo Santana, brother of the formidable Waldemar Santana, on just 15 days' notice and following an extended period without training. He subsequently assumed the presidency of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro (FJJERJ), a role he maintained for many years, exercising significant influence over the regulation, promotion, and legitimization of BJJ as a competitive sport.

His lifetime of contributions has been recognized at the highest level of the art: Robson Gracie holds the 9th degree red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one of the most prestigious distinctions the martial art can confer.
