Abdurakhman Bilarov

Born on May 25, 1990, in Makhachkala — the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia — Abdurakhman Bilarov grew up in a region where freestyle wrestling is deeply woven into the cultural identity. Training from childhood as a member of Ali Alyev's well-respected wrestling squad, Bilarov developed the technical discipline and physical conditioning that define elite grapplers. The emphasis on takedowns, body control, and relentless pressure that freestyle wrestling demands gave him a formidable foundation — one that would prove decisive as he later transitioned into submission grappling.

In 2009, at the age of 19, Bilarov was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by friends who had taken up the art. What began as curiosity rapidly evolved into serious commitment. His wrestling instincts translated naturally to the BJJ mat, and he progressively shifted his competitive focus from wrestling toward submission grappling, building a BJJ game that complemented and amplified everything his wrestling background had instilled.

Bilarov's development accelerated when he began training under Rafael Haubert, a Team Nogueira affiliate whose technical guidance would shape him into a world-class competitor. Under Haubert's direction, Bilarov's game refined rapidly — his wrestling base fusing with precise BJJ technique to produce a style both physically imposing and technically sharp.

The results at the colored belt level were nothing short of historic. Bilarov captured gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro in three consecutive editions — as a blue belt in 2013, as a purple belt in 2014, and as a brown belt in 2015. Winning one of the most competitive no-gi events in the world across three consecutive belt levels is an exceptional achievement by any measure, and it established Bilarov as the most exciting European grappling prospect of his generation. Following his third consecutive Abu Dhabi World Pro title in 2015, Rafael Haubert awarded Bilarov his black belt — a promotion that reflected both his technical maturity and an unmatched competitive record at the sub-black-belt level. Bilarov is widely recognized as the first high-level BJJ competitor produced by Russia, a distinction that underscores his trailblazing role in the sport's development in his home country.

While his Abu Dhabi World Pro titles had already drawn significant attention across the BJJ community, it was Bilarov's performance at the Berkut Challenge in 2015 that truly announced his arrival at the sport's elite level. Still competing as a brown belt, he entered the open tournament and emerged victorious — defeating two of the world's premier black belts along the way. His wins over Jackson Sousa and Claudio Calasans, both established names at the highest tier of the sport, sent a clear message: Bilarov was not merely a promising prospect but a legitimate threat to the best in the world, regardless of rank.

Beating world-class black belts as a brown belt is a rare achievement, and for Bilarov these performances served as a defining statement — cementing his reputation as a generational talent from Europe and setting the standard for what his black belt career would demand.

Bilarov entered black belt competition in 2015 carrying the weight of considerable expectation, and he continued to deliver on the international stage. Competing in the Peso Pesado (heavyweight) division, he remained active across the European and international BJJ and submission grappling circuits, representing Russia as its pioneering high-level figure in the sport.

In 2017, Bilarov produced some of the most significant results of his black belt career. He won the ADCC European Trials, earning qualification for the prestigious ADCC World Championship — widely regarded as the most competitive no-gi submission grappling event in the world. That same year, he reached the final of the ACB 9 Grand Prix 2017, finishing as runner-up in a strong field, and claimed third place at the ACB World Championship. Across three major events in a single year, Bilarov demonstrated the consistency and competitive durability that define elite-level grapplers, reinforcing his standing as one of the most accomplished heavyweights to emerge from Russia and the broader European grappling scene.
