The wrestling credentials he accumulated at the collegiate level — explosive takedowns, elite scrambling ability, and an ingrained mastery of body control — gave him a head start that few BJJ beginners can claim. His transition into Brazilian jiu-jitsu drew widespread attention precisely because of that background, positioning him among the most prominent wrestlers to cross over into gi and no-gi grappling competition in recent years.

Where many fighters treat BJJ as a supplement to striking, Downey committed to it as a primary pursuit. His wrestling pedigree accelerated a learning curve that would have taken most practitioners far longer to climb, and the grappling community took notice.

Downey began his BJJ journey at white belt, earning his first stripe early before his development accelerated at a pace that attracted considerable attention. He was awarded his purple belt after approximately six months of dedicated training — a timeline that places him among the fastest progressors the sport has seen — fueled by the body awareness and grappling instincts carried over from wrestling. On Instagram, Downey publicly credited Vagner Rocha and Monroe Hall for their significant roles in his no-gi development from white to purple belt.

On August 27, 2026, Herbert Burns — brother of UFC veteran Gilbert Burns — promoted Downey to brown belt. The occasion marked approximately five years of training, and Downey has been vocal about a broader ambition: to become the fastest black belt in the sport's history. Notably, the IBJJF five-year suspension issued against him restricts IBJJF-sanctioned competition but leaves his grading and ranking affiliation intact, meaning his belt progression under his instructors continues unimpeded regardless of his standing with the federation.

The Match and Its Aftermath

Downey entered the 2024 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship in the blue belt division and submitted his way to the title, defeating Shamil Murtazaliev in what appeared to be a decisive performance. The aftermath, however, overshadowed the victory. Following the submission, a physical altercation broke out between Downey and Murtazaliev — who reportedly confronted Downey after regaining consciousness — and the IBJJF disqualified both competitors as a result. Despite the disqualification, Downey received a purple belt promotion following the event. Murtazaliev subsequently received a separate two-year competition ban from the IBJJF for his role in the post-match misconduct.

Downey's Account and Criticism

Downey argued publicly that the sequence of events reflected a pattern of uneven enforcement rather than a legitimate violation on his part. Speaking on The Grapplers Perspective Podcast, he described a separate episode at the same event in which members of an opponent's team allegedly occupied a black-belt-and-coaches-only area of the venue without consequence, while his own conduct drew close scrutiny. He recounted that the confrontation escalated when his opponent "started swinging" at him — a situation he characterized as defensive — and noted that the outcome cost him both his medal and his team's competition points.

His broader criticism extended to the gesture that initially drew official attention. Downey stated directly: "Here's how racist the IBJJF is… I'm all I'm doing is emulating the gesture I've seen done at your Federation that you've never penalized. I've never seen them penalize a Brazilian for doing this gesture." Reflecting on the overall outcome, he summarized: "It was a bummer because I didn't get to score the points for my team either and then I didn't get my medal. They said it was for the gestures and stuff. So I guess if he wouldn't have swung on me and gotten himself DQ'd, he would have won and gotten the gold medal, so it's pretty crazy."

In March 2025, the IBJJF formalized its disciplinary action against Downey, issuing a five-year competition suspension effective December 13, 2024, through December 12, 2029. The federation's disciplinary letter cited "Acts of Physical or Verbal Aggression, Damage, or Non-compliance" and identified "inciting violence" as an aggravating factor — one that, under IBJJF guidelines, carries the potential to increase the base penalty by up to 50%.

Downey's response on social media was unsparing. He referred to the IBJJF as a "goofy wet chicken nugget promotion" and showed no indication of seeking reconciliation with the federation. His accusations of systemic bias were direct: "They just don't like when Brazilians aren't winning," he stated, adding a definitive conclusion — "You'll never catch me on the IBJJF again." Alongside the pointed criticism, Downey articulated a substantive position on officiating reform, calling for "a more clear defined rule set for the judges and the fans and the scoring" and proposing a more transparent judging system to reduce uncertainty for competitors and spectators alike. The suspension bars him from IBJJF-sanctioned competition through late 2029 but does not affect his ability to pursue belt promotions, maintain membership, or compete under other organizations.

With the IBJJF effectively closed to him through the end of the decade, Downey directed his competitive attention toward the growing independent grappling circuit. He signed an exclusive contract with Polaris for submission grappling matches in the United Kingdom, aligning himself with one of Europe's premier no-gi promotion brands. He also joined the over 80kg division of the Craig Jones Invitational and received an invitation to compete at CJI 2, held August 30–31, 2025. As of July 6, 2025, Downey was confirmed as the under 99kg representative for Team Misfits Americas at that event.
