Ali Monfaradi

Ali Monfaradi was born on October 30, 1993, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, an island nation nestled in the Persian Gulf. Raised in a country where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu had limited infrastructure and few established competitive pathways, Monfaradi's entry into the sport was shaped almost entirely by family influence. His uncle, Reza Monfaradi, served as a pioneering figure for jiu-jitsu in Bahrain and became Ali's primary technical and competitive reference point from the very beginning.

At the age of 12, in 2006, Monfaradi began training under his uncle's guidance. With scarce high-level coaching resources and minimal local competition, his early development stands as a testament to both his natural aptitude and his determination to pursue the sport seriously. Those formative years, built on a foundation of relative isolation from the global BJJ ecosystem, would ultimately shape him into the first high-level competitor from Bahrain to make a meaningful impact on the international stage.

Monfaradi's competitive ambitions outgrew Bahrain's borders early. After finishing high school, he traveled to California to compete in the 2011 IBJJF World Championship, where he earned a bronze medal in the blue belt division — a striking result for a teenage competitor from a country with virtually no BJJ history on the world stage. That performance proved to be a preview of greater things: in 2012, Monfaradi captured gold at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pans Championship at blue belt, establishing himself as one of the top competitors globally in his division.

Training at Alliance Headquarters

Recognizing that sustained excellence demanded an elite environment, Monfaradi made the pivotal decision to relocate to São Paulo, Brazil, and train full-time at Alliance headquarters under Fábio Gurgel. The years he spent in Brazil were transformative on every level. He immersed himself in Brazilian culture, learned Portuguese, and enrolled in a local computer science university — all while dedicating himself to sharpening his game inside one of the world's most storied academies.

After approximately four and a half years in Brazil, Monfaradi returned to Bahrain as a brown belt — a rank at which he continued to compete with distinction, including a 3rd place finish at the 2017 IBJJF European Open. In July 2017, Fábio Gurgel promoted him to black belt, formally recognizing his growth as a product of Alliance's elite training standards.

Returning to Bahrain with the methodology and standards of a world-class academy behind him, Monfaradi channeled his experience into building the sport at home. He took on the role of head coach at Elements Jiu-Jitsu Academy, competing under the Alliance / Elements JJA banner while working to elevate the level of BJJ across Bahrain and the broader Middle East region. His nickname — "The Beast From The Middle East" — captures both his competitive intensity and his identity as a standard-bearer for grappling in his part of the world.

Monfaradi's coaching career has run in parallel with his continued high-level competition, allowing him to model the discipline and habits he demands from his students. His impact on the Asian BJJ landscape earned formal recognition from the AJP, which named him the Best Asian Athlete in both 2020 and 2021 — back-to-back honors that cemented his standing as the leading competitive figure from the Asian continent during that period.

Monfaradi's transition to the black belt division brought no drop in competitive output. Competing at Peso Leve (76 kg / 168 lbs), he maintained an active schedule across both the IBJJF and AJP circuits in gi and no-gi formats alike. In 2019, he captured gold at the 2019 IBJJF European Open No-Gi — his most prominent IBJJF title at black belt — and added a further gold at the AJP Czech Republic Pro that same year, demonstrating consistency across formats and organizations.

AJP Circuit Highlights

On the AJP circuit, Monfaradi reached the final of the 2021 AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro, finishing as runner-up in one of submission grappling's most prestigious annual events. He also claimed bronze medals at the AJP Grand Slam in London in 2020 and in Tokyo in 2024, reflecting a career arc that has remained sharply competitive well into the 2020s. Across the IBJJF's European events, he accumulated podium finishes at the Berlin Open, Dallas Open, and London Fall Open in both gi and no-gi formats — a record that speaks to his durability and breadth as a competitor.

Alongside his BJJ career, Monfaradi has represented Bahrain at the national level in sport ju-jutsu under the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) — a parallel track that has produced some of the most significant results of his competitive life. He claimed back-to-back gold medals at the JJIF Asian Indoor Games in 2016 and 2017, raising Bahrain's profile in regional grappling competition at a time when he was still refining his black belt game in BJJ.

At the continental level, Monfaradi won the JJIF Asian Championship in both 2017 and 2021, establishing himself as the dominant competitor in his category across a multi-year span. His performances at the JJIF World Ju-Jutsu Championship further illustrated his sustained excellence: he medaled at the event in 2018 (bronze) and 2020 (silver) before reaching the top of the podium in 2021 with a world championship gold. This dual success across BJJ and sport ju-jutsu underscores both his versatility as a grappler and his unwavering commitment to representing Bahrain at the highest levels of international competition.
