About this video

Starting from the belly handle guard, the setup for the De La Spider technique involves the following steps:

  1. Start with one hook and a foot on the opponent's bicep. Control the opponent's ankle or the front of their pants, whichever feels more comfortable.
  2. With your collar grip, grab all the way into the opponent's armpit to anchor down and keep their posture broken. This grip is stronger and harder to break than a grip on the lapel.
  3. Raise your hip and look for the deep De La Riva hook. A simple way to do this is to move the foot from the bicep to the hip, raise your hips, turn them, and get your hook all the way across the hip.
  4. Reset by bringing your right foot from the opponent's hip behind their knee and lock your legs.
  5. Once in this position, the opponent will be off balance. They may put their knee down or stay up, but either way, you can still set up your choke.
  6. Control the opponent's sleeve and rock them to the left side. If they post, you can get the sweep. If they don't post, you can start to come up.
  7. Assuming the opponent posts and doesn't want to get swept, when they come back, snap their head down. Make sure to raise your forearm and bicep above their head for a tight grip.
  8. Bring your left hook out and raise it above the opponent's shoulder. From here, the choke will be very tight and you can get your finish.
