About this video

Starting in the closed guard, the objective is to get the opponent's hands on the mat. If the opponent is controlling your collar, make a grip, bring your hand underneath, break it, and pull your grip back and behind your head, swimming over like you're trying to make an overhook. Instead of making an overhook, reach to control behind the opponent's head. Put your left foot on the mat, do a little hip escape, change your angle, bring your foot to the hip and your left leg high, and your left arm under your leg to control his collar.

  1. Once you get here, you will have the opponent's posture broken down well. If they try to posture up, cuff the back of their head and keep your grip strong. Try to keep your elbow clamped down to compromise their posture.
  2. The most common attacks from here are the omoplata and the triangle if you can begin to control the wrist and set it up. However, when you get here, opponents are often very focused on keeping their shoulder tight and watching out for the triangle, so you can set up the loop choke very easily.
  3. Switch your right hand right into their collar. With your left hand, bring it out and slap it forward into your hip. Make sure to sit up, get your forearm above their head and have your leg in position to finish your choke. Pull across the collar, pull your fingers up and lean back to finish the choke.

Another detail with this technique is to make sure that your knee points up. If you start being lazy with your leg, the opponent will be able to push down and start passing through this space. So make sure that your foot stays on the hip and that your knee points up. The loop choke is a less common attack that can be very successful in this position. Let go of the back of their head, make sure you still clamp so if they try to posture up, it's difficult. Make your grip on the collar, let go, slap their head down, sit up and raise your forearm. Get your hand as deep as possible and clamp. The clamp will kill their posture and escape. Pull, punch your fingers through, and lean back to finish the choke.
