Her father's career as a Navy officer meant that stability came not from geography but from the values and disciplines the family carried across each posting. Those early years produced a natural athlete — Khan competed in ballet, soccer, karate, and tee-ball, with soccer emerging as her most serious competitive outlet during that period.

Khan's martial arts journey began with karate at age 6, a discipline that took hold quickly. When a family relocation to Hawaii cut off access to instruction, she didn't step away from martial arts — she pivoted. In January 2010, she joined O2 Martial Arts in Hawaii under the Onzuka Brothers and Shane Agena, beginning her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training at age 8.

The connection to grappling was immediate. Recognizing the value of a complete ground game, Khan integrated judo and wrestling into her training — not as standalone pursuits, but as tools to sharpen her jiu-jitsu. The Onzuka Brothers and Shane Agena at O2 Martial Arts awarded her yellow belt in Hawaii, where her BJJ story began. A relocation to New Hampshire brought her under Kevin Watson at KWBJJ, where she earned her orange belt. A subsequent move to Virginia placed her with Gustavo Machado, who awarded her green belt.

By age 12, Khan had already set her sights on a professional BJJ career — a striking clarity of purpose for an athlete who had spent her formative years moving from base to base. That conviction gave direction to what could otherwise have been a fragmented training history.

The AOJ Chapter

The defining turn came when Khan arrived at Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) in Costa Mesa, California, entering the academy as an orange belt. Guilherme Mendes awarded Khan her blue, purple, brown, and black belts — her entire upper-belt journey completed under a single coach.

The black belt ceremony took place on October 6, 2020, two days before her 19th birthday, making Khan one of the youngest recipients of the rank in high-level competitive BJJ.

Technical Identity

Jessa Khan's competition game is built on relentless aggression and forward pressure — a style that translates across weight classes and rule sets and has made her one of the most feared athletes in the Peso Galo division (48.5 kg / 107 lbs).
