Mia Funegra

Born in November 2006 in California, USA, Mia Funegra began her martial arts journey at the age of five, training in Krav Maga alongside her twin sister, Ashlee. Encouraged by their parents to engage in sports early on, the sisters developed a solid athletic foundation through their initial martial arts exposure. In early 2014, inspired by their father Michael's involvement in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mia and Ashlee transitioned to training at the prestigious Art Of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) Academy.

Early Competitive Success

Joining the AOJ Kids Program in 2014 under the mentorship of renowned instructor Guilherme Mendes, Mia quickly distinguished herself through exceptional talent and unwavering dedication. Her competitive debut in January 2015 marked the start of an impressive career trajectory. Alongside her sisters Ashlee and Natalee, Mia emerged as a standout athlete within the AOJ Kids Program, representing a new generation of elite competitors following in the footsteps of earlier AOJ prodigies such as Zach Kaina, Jessa Khan, Shelby Murphey, and Cole Abate.

On May 29, 2025, Mia Funegra received her black belt from instructor Guilherme Mendes, alongside her twin sister Ashlee. Although Mia had not yet fulfilled the standard minimum time requirement at her previous rank, her victory at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship at brown belt in December 2024 qualified her for an exemption. Shortly after her promotion, Mia made history by becoming the youngest IBJJF black belt world champion, solidifying her reputation as one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's rising stars.
