Nic Ruben Nikolaisen

Nic Ruben Nikolaisen was born on June 22, 1978, in Holmestrand, Norway — a small coastal town outside of Oslo. His martial arts journey began at 13, when he took up taekwondo and pursued it with genuine commitment, competing regularly and earning a black belt. Despite his growing proficiency, Ruben grew dissatisfied with what the art offered, coming to view it as a sport rather than a comprehensive martial discipline. That distinction drove him toward kickboxing in search of a more complete striking education.

A chronic hamstring tear — an injury that persisted for roughly fifteen years — ultimately made the demands of striking arts untenable and accelerated his departure. Shortly after his 21st birthday, Ruben left Norway and relocated to Australia. Exposure to early UFC broadcasts introduced him to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and the ground-based combat he witnessed on screen struck him as the missing piece in his martial education. He found his first academy at Vincent Perry's school on the Gold Coast, stepping onto the mats and beginning what would become a career-defining pursuit.

Blue and Purple Belt: Rickson Gracie and the Los Angeles Years

Approximately two years into his training — around 2001 — Ruben began making extended trips to Los Angeles, staying between three and six months at a time to train under Rickson Gracie. The legendary Gracie recognized Ruben's development and awarded him his blue belt, a milestone that carried considerable prestige given its source.

After completing his studies in Australia, Ruben returned to Norway and continued training at a local grappling club. In 2005, Marcelo Santiago — known as "Yogui" — traveled to Norway and, having witnessed Ruben's growth firsthand, awarded him his purple belt. That same year, Ruben made another extended trip to Los Angeles to train under Shawn Williams, a black belt under Renzo Gracie running a Renzo Gracie affiliate academy in the city. The experience resonated deeply, and the two forged a close friendship that brought Ruben back to train with Williams on numerous occasions.

Brown and Black Belt: The Eduardo Rios Partnership

The most consequential relationship of Ruben's BJJ career took shape around 2005 and 2006, when Eduardo Rios — widely known by his nickname "Teta" — began making regular visits to Norway. Already an established and highly respected figure in jiu-jitsu, Rios soon began teaching during those visits, and a natural partnership with Ruben formed. Rios awarded Ruben his brown belt in 2006 and, following years of consistent development and competitive success, his black belt in March 2009.

The bond between Ruben and Eduardo Rios extended well beyond competition and training — it gave rise to one of Scandinavia's most important BJJ institutions. Around 2005 and 2006, as Rios's presence in Norway became more consistent, the two co-founded Frontline Academy alongside two other partners, establishing what would become a cornerstone of European grappling culture under the banner of Frontline Jiu-Jitsu.

Rios brought exceptional technical depth as head instructor, while Ruben's competitive credibility and investment in the project gave the academy strong foundations from the outset. In the years that followed, Frontline Academy grew into one of the most recognized BJJ programs in Europe — producing competitive athletes and serving as a hub for practitioners across the region. Ruben's role as co-founder positioned him as a central figure in the legitimization and growth of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Norway.

Before receiving his black belt, Ruben had already established himself as one of the most dangerous no-gi competitors in Europe. The crowning result of that period came at the World No-Gi Championship in 2007, where he claimed the title at brown belt — a remarkable achievement that signaled elite-level grappling capability well before he reached the sport's highest rank.

Ruben's achievements record also includes a runner-up finish at the World No-Gi Championship at brown belt, a result that likely reflects a separate weight division or open class entry, or an appearance at the 2008 edition of the tournament. He further demonstrated his consistency with a 3rd place finish at the European Open Championship at brown belt in 2008, adding another podium result to a record that spoke clearly to his standing among Europe's best.

Early Black Belt Success

The transition to black belt competition in March 2009 did not slow Ruben's momentum. In 2010, he reached the runner-up position at the European Open Championship — one of the most competitive annual events on the IBJJF calendar — and added a 3rd place finish at the Pan American No-Gi Championship that same year, demonstrating that his no-gi credentials translated seamlessly to the black belt division.

Sustained Podium Presence

Over the years that followed, Ruben continued to register meaningful results on the European circuit, earning 3rd place finishes at the European No-Gi Championship in 2012, 2014, and 2015. Those repeated podium appearances, spanning nearly a decade of black belt competition, speak to a durability and adaptability that set him apart from many of his contemporaries. His career arc — from a late starter on the Gold Coast to a multi-time no-gi champion and consistent international podium finisher — establishes Ruben as one of the most accomplished grapplers Norway and broader European BJJ has produced.
