The Gracie family's influence shaped Eduardo's upbringing long before he ever set foot on the mats. His grandfather was a devoted admirer of Hélio Gracie who regularly attended Hélio's fights, while his uncle trained at Gracie Barra — two figures whose shared enthusiasm for jiu-jitsu planted the seeds of Eduardo's own passion for the art.

Like many Brazilian athletes of his generation, Rios began his martial arts journey with judo, progressing to brown belt before his grandfather encouraged him to make the transition to jiu-jitsu. His early BJJ exposure came through summer courses at Gracie Barra under Zé Beleza, and through mat sessions with his neighbor Tolita 'Pitoco' Jordan — a training partner who also happened to be his surfing companion.
