Francisco Mansor was born in 1940 in Brazil, into a household where jiu-jitsu was already woven into the family fabric. His father had trained privately in his younger years and passed that foundational knowledge on to his son, planting the seeds of a lifelong dedication to the art. As a teenager, Mansor relocated to the centre of Rio de Janeiro to pursue his studies, and it was there that his formal martial arts education truly took shape. At the age of 15, he sought out Helio Gracie and began training directly under the legendary Grand Master — an encounter that would define the entire trajectory of his life in jiu-jitsu.

Francisco Mansor's connection to Helio Gracie places him among an extraordinarily select group in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He stands as one of only six men outside the Gracie family to have received a black belt directly from Helio Gracie — a distinction that speaks to both his technical mastery and the profound trust placed in him by one of the art's founding figures.

Training under Helio Gracie from the age of 15, Mansor absorbed the foundational self-defense philosophy that defined the Gracie approach: a system built on efficiency, leverage, and practical application over athleticism. That immersion ultimately earned him a 9th degree red belt, the highest recognition of mastery within the art, cementing his status as one of its most authentic custodians. His lineage traces an unbroken line back to the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and is widely regarded as among the most direct and traditional in the world.

By the age of 17, Mansor had already developed the confidence to step into vale tudo competition — the no-holds-barred format that served as the ultimate crucible for martial artists of that era. Despite spending much of the night before his debut unable to sleep, he maintained his composure once inside the ring and finished his opponent in a remarkable 17 seconds.

That debut proved to be the opening chapter of an extraordinary competitive record. Over the course of his fighting career, Mansor competed in 39 vale tudo bouts and won every single one, retiring from competition completely undefeated. That record lent considerable authority to his identity as both a practitioner and a teacher, reinforcing the real-world effectiveness of the principles he carried from his years under Helio Gracie.

In 1965, at the age of 25, Francisco Mansor opened Kioto, establishing one of the first BJJ academies to operate with a strict, written curriculum — a structured pedagogical framework that set it apart from its earliest days. That curriculum was rooted firmly in the foundational techniques of Helio Gracie and maintained a strong emphasis on the self-defense dimensions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, reflecting the philosophy Mansor had absorbed through years of direct training under the Grand Master.

Over time, Kioto grew into one of the most traditional and respected jiu-jitsu institutions in the world, recognized for its adherence to classical principles at a time when the sport was rapidly evolving. The academy also developed one of the largest and most active youth jiu-jitsu programs in Rio de Janeiro — a cornerstone of Mansor's broader legacy as a coach. His first black belt, Marcelo Rezende Filho, marked the beginning of a lineage that would extend across continents.

Mansor's reputation as a coach rests on decades of exceptional work developing young talent through the Kioto youth program, which became one of the most sought-after children's sporting activities in Rio de Janeiro. His ability to communicate the fundamentals of grappling with clarity and depth produced a remarkable generation of high-caliber practitioners.

Among the most notable figures to emerge from his tutelage are Augusto Tanquinho, Claudio França, Joe Moreira, Carlos Henrique, and his nephew Alvaro Mansor, each of whom went on to make significant contributions to the sport at the competitive and instructional levels. The broader reach of Mansor's lineage is reflected in the prominent academies it gave rise to — Claudio França BJJ, Brazil 021, and Soul Fighters — all of which trace their roots back to the methods and philosophy established at Kioto.

Beyond his work on the mat, Francisco Mansor played a meaningful role in the institutional development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, contributing to the establishment of the first jiu-jitsu federation in Brazil — the Rio de Janeiro Federation. His involvement in that foundational effort helped lay the groundwork for the sport's organized growth within Brazil and, eventually, across the world.

His contributions to martial arts more broadly have earned him recognition far beyond the BJJ community. Mansor has been inducted into the World Karate Hall of Fame, the Action Martial Arts Magazine Hall of Fame, the American Okinawan Karate Association Hall of Fame, and the Budo International Magazine Hall of Fame — a collection of honors that reflects both the global reach of his influence and the esteem in which the wider martial arts world holds him.

Francisco Mansor eventually relocated from Brazil to the United States, though he has continued to oversee the broader direction of the Kioto organization. Upon his departure, he entrusted the day-to-day leadership of the academy to Alvaro Mansor and Kraus Mansor, ensuring continuity in both operations and foundational philosophy.

In 2008, Alvaro Mansor departed Kioto to co-found Soul Fighters alongside a group of former Kioto students — a significant moment in the evolution of the lineage. Despite this transition, Kioto has endured as one of Brazil's most traditional and respected BJJ institutions, guided by the principles Master Francisco Mansor established across more than half a century of dedication to the art.
