Livio Ribeiro

Lívio Ribeiro was born on April 27, 1993, in Bacabal, Maranhão, Brazil — a city nestled in the northeastern interior of the country. At age 6, following his parents' divorce, he relocated to Teresina, the capital of Piauí state, where his formative years and martial arts journey would unfold. Rather than locking into a single discipline early, Ribeiro sampled a range of combat sports — karate, judo, and capoeira — before discovering the art that would define his life.

At age 15, Ribeiro stepped onto the BJJ mat for the first time, a moment that reoriented his athletic path entirely. He began training at Projeto Social QG da Luta, a social project gym in Teresina, under the guidance of coaches Helder Mourão and Luiz 'Major'. The environment at QG da Luta gave Ribeiro a rigorous foundation in technique and competitive preparation — the building blocks for a career that would eventually carry him far beyond Piauí.

Ribeiro's climb through the colored belt divisions was defined by consistent excellence at the highest levels of international competition. His emergence on the global stage became undeniable in 2016 when he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open at purple belt, announcing himself as a serious force on the IBJJF circuit. That same year, he added a CBJJ Brazilian Nationals title at purple belt — a feat he had already achieved in 2015 and would repeat at brown belt in 2017, demonstrating sustained dominance across multiple belt levels.

The 2017 season brought further momentum when Ribeiro captured the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi title at brown belt, reinforcing his effectiveness in both gi and no-gi formats. His brown belt campaign peaked in early 2018 with gold at the 2018 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, followed by the IBJJF World Championship at brown belt later that year — one of the most prestigious pre-black belt titles in the sport. An IBJJF South American Championship title at purple belt in 2014 further illustrated how early his competitive instincts had sharpened.

In June 2018, riding the momentum of his brown belt world title, Ribeiro received his black belt promotion — a milestone that felt less like a surprise and more like the natural culmination of years of elite-level competition.

Seeking to sharpen his game against the world's best, Ribeiro left Brazil for the United States alongside training partner Alef Brito. The two relocated to Modesto, California, where Ribeiro joined Ares Jiu Jitsu under the instruction of Osvaldo Moizinho, a decorated black belt recognized for developing technically refined, system-driven athletes.

The transition proved immediately productive. Shortly after his black belt promotion in 2018, Ribeiro secured gold at both the CBJJE World Championship and the SJJIF World Championship, while finishing as runner-up at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi — a result that underscored his versatility across competitive formats. The 2021 season delivered his most significant black belt title when he claimed gold at the 2021 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, validating both his individual growth and the high-performance environment that Ares Jiu Jitsu cultivates.

Within the BJJ community, Lívio Ribeiro is widely recognized as a specialist in the 50/50 Guard — a leg entanglement position that creates simultaneous sweep and submission opportunities for both athletes. The 50/50 system serves as his signature weapon, a technical identity built through deliberate study and countless hours of refinement on the mat.

Ribeiro competes in the Peso Galo division at 127 lbs / 57.5 kg, a weight class where speed, timing, and positional precision carry far more weight than raw physicality.
